TF2 Ownership Stats

Ars just posted a very interesting article on stats they generated by scraping Steam user profiles:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/04/introducing-steam-gauge-ars-reveals-steams-most-popular-games/

(tl;dr) Here are the TF2 related charts:

http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/stacked-hours-correct.001.png

I think it's interesting that TF2 makes up ~8% of total hours of all games played on Steam, but it doesn't even show up on the median number of hours per owner chart. This means that most of the hours played in TF2 are contributed by a relatively small number of players with *lots* of playtime. This is hardly surprising, but a very interesting insight to be statistically proven.

between competitive players and idling accounts i'm not surprised at all, but this is really cool. Thanks for posting it.

Crazy how TF2 has been outplayed by Dota 2 (in total hours) when Dota2 has been out for less than a year.

In the article, they note that Steam has only had the "Hours played" profile stat since 2009. Most likely everybody got their fill of HL2 long before then and hasn't played since.

This also includes the first year+ of tf2's life, when it was probably notably more popular.

Nah, I'm pretty sure its popularity was highest after it went free to play in 2011.

Well I guess if I bothered to do more than look at the pictures I would have caught that

So why is C:SS being played over GO? I understand why people play 1.6, but GO is just upgraded CS:S, and C:SS has no league play.

Ah, okay. That makes way more sense. Thought these were recent from within the year or something like that.

Yeah 1.6 and source have been around for years so it makes sense that they would have the upper hand in accumulating players.
