ping spikes issue

Alright so when anyone in my house is watching movies or tv shows online with websites like Netflix or Hulu I get massive ping spikes. My ping goes up to around 700 every minute or so, then slowly falls back down, then a minute later it's back up again. This makes it quite difficult to play consistently, as one might imagine. I have a wired ethernet connection, and my internet speed is 35Mbps downstream. My router is 2 years old; could that be the problem? Is it getting overloaded or something? Any help would be appreciated.

your router most likely isn't prioritizing your connection properly
