If you already know the basics of TF2 and want to sharpen your skills and make the jump to competitive play, come join us Saturday night for Newbie Mixes and learn how to play competitive 9v9 Highlander (one of each class) games with the help of experienced players! For this special first time, I've personally asked plat players to help coach so be sure to take advantage if you're interested.

We will start at around 9pm EST this Saturday May 23rd. To start playing, join the mumble server with the instructions provided below and then the channel with the name of the class you wish to play along with the experience you have. If you're confused about this, don't worry, there will be more specific instructions once you join the mumble server.

Since this is the first time we organize this, we hope it will be somewhat small to get everyone familiarized with the system (including the people helping out). We're gonna have about two TF2 servers available to start with (meaning 36 players at a time, 4 coaches) but we can get a couple more if they're needed.

Now for the thanks part. Thanks to Mamboulay for helping me organize this, KevinIsPwn for answering all my questions and helping me with the setup. A big thanks to tragicservers for providing the mumble and TF2 servers. Thanks to all the coaches and also thanks to everyone who read this and is interested in playing.

There's more specific stuff directed towards new players on the reddit thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/truetf2/comments/36b9wy/new_highlander_newbie_mixes_this_saturday_may/

as a sixes player who is fairly clueless about the under workings of highlander would it be okay if I came, or should I avoid it because I wouldn't want to crush spirits of super new players with my DM despite a total lack of game sense compared to some of the players who might attend either way it is super cool you are running this metawe

if you play a less dm-oriented class (pyro/ medic/ spy/ etc) you could maybe get away with it just to learn the ropes of hl as a format.

the transition from 6s to HL is not hard, it still revolves around all the same basic concepts, and many of the class vs. class engagements play out the same, and the rest of the gamesense is based on pub stuff, like how to kill degreaser pyros, track dead ringers, when you can and can't push against a mini sentry, etc.

I honestly think just playing in tf2centers and trying out/scrimming with teams would be more appropriate for someone like you, as your dm and gamesense in competitive are both going to be far above what most people are bringing to the table in these newbie mixes.

great idea! i would love to know what the threshold for coaching is, but even if i don't make the cut for coaching i would love to take part as a player.

For this first time I've personally asked high plat players to help coach since I wanna give people the best possible experience. For the following events however, I'm thinking of having any gold+ player be able to coach and see if we can get enough coaches from that pool of players, if not I'll open it up for silver as well.

sounds good. will probably take part in a mix or two once finals are done, looking forward to helping out some new players even if i cant coach. did you post this on r/tf2 as well as r/truetf2? there may be more people there looking to start out in competitive.

It's so easy not to click on imgur links like if you just ignore them you don't have to see the pictures you can always count on anything pankey posts to be anime and he's the only one who consistently does it

I have posted in r/truetf2 and UGC forums but I don't want to post in r/tf2 just yet as that would most likely bring way more players than I can handle this first time doing it, I want to get familiarized with the system and everything. For the second newbie mix and on I will certainly post there as well though since the whole point is to introduce new players to competitive including the ones who have just not heard about it or visit competitive-related forums.

So the mixes were pretty successful overall. I am hoping to do them every Saturday and will definitely need a lot of coaches since I expect the amount of players to double or more once I advertise in more places.

If you're interested in coaching, just hop into the mumble anytime starting at 9pm EST, go into the coaches channel and the admins will direct you from there. I would prefer if coaches had at least gold experience since they have a deeper understanding of how the game should be played and what works and doesn't.
