Don't forget: we'll have informal (or are they now formal?) newbie PUGs (Pick Up Games) after 12 EST for anyone who can't make the original time slot or who just want to stick around.

Since you're trying the every week thing, can you alternate between saturday and friday mixes?

After one of my mixes as Demo, the other coach came in and said that im too good for newbie mixes and shouldn't play anymore. Is it wrong to keep playing and having fun, especially if it isn't my main class, or a class I'm not good at?

We have some new things planned for this weekend. Plus we've done a bit of quality control on coaches. You will see what i mean on Saturday night.

Nah. The purpose of newbie mixes is to teach new players how to play. When you've been playing newbie mixes for 6 months, stomping newbies isn't constructive to anyone. There are so many other outlets to play and learn about tf2, newbie mixes are meant as a quick boost into competitive, not a place for you to play easy pickup games when you no longer need the help and aren't a new player.

Please don't, that's the only night that's devoid of TF2 things. It's the best time for New Map Pugs. Every day besides Friday and Saturday is scrim-filled. If Newbie Mixes and New Map Pugs are run at the same time, then both will suffer: Newbie Mixes won't have enough coaches (implying it ever does- side note: if you're qualified to coach in mixes (at least one season of Open, preferably 2 or IM experience) then coach!), and New Map Pugs will pretty much exclusively get people that do know how to play the game, but (generally) not at a good enough level to constructively criticize maps. The coaches really need to come help new maps too (and some do, not all though); if you host Newbie Mixes on Fridays, then none will. And I think we can all agree that not testing maps is a bad thing.

Hope this makes sense, it's 3:30 here and I should get to bed.

Even more reason to alternate, then. A lot of players can't make saturdays at all, it wouldn't make sense to deny them the newbie mix experience and the whole getting into competitive thing just for new map pugs. Not getting a large portion of a playerbase into competitive is also a bad thing, and imo a lot worse than not testing new maps every week.

I think having a bunch of maps even worse than Ashville would not be good either.

I think alternating every other weekend would be best. Ideally, New Map Pugs wouldn't even exist because teams would actually test new maps in scrims, but that's never going to happen.

My god I hate ashville ^
But maps like snakewater process gully and gpit are good, along with 6s viaduct.

All of those besides Process (and throw in Metalworks) have quite a few people that hate them. Granary is less so, but is probably more hated than Badlands and Process. It's probably not the best idea to have quite a few maps that a sizable portion of the community hates.

It'd be nice if they were an option though, last weekend most of the servers -only- had Granary, Badlands, and possibly Gullywash.
A lot of people in the mix wanted to do `anything but these three again` but that's all we had.
The tragic servers have been amazing in every other aspect, but more map selection options would be nice :]

We only teach the newbies strictly Badlands and Granary. These are the two bread and butter map of 6s. Once knowledge of these maps have been acquired by the newbies, they can move on to other pugs to experiment with other maps.

I would say Process would be a good map to include, as it's basically up there with those two. However, it's a custom map and it would be best to not deal with that.

It is very difficult to explain rollouts on this map to newbies.

What about viaduct? Rollouts are basic, strats are completely different and I feel like we could learn a lot by playing a different game mode once in awhile!

Maybe... Only if the coach is the medic though. Viaduct is horrible to learn as medic.

Just a thought, but you could try having one set map on each server, and which ever map is on the server you're assigned to is the one you have to play. There's maybe 5 most commonly played 6s maps - badlands, granary, gully, snake, and process. For 11 servers, you could have two of each map and an extra server with whatever; or you could do 3 blands, 3 gran, 3 gully, 1 snake, and 1 process; or you could just set them all to asheville if you wanted. The map combos would be up to coaches or whoever to decide, but that way you can add some map variety while avoiding choice conflict between players (which seems to be the only problem I could see with adding maps). It's like setting your mp3 player to shuffle, you never know what you're gonna get but you'll probably end up liking it. Anywho.. I think there are benefits to playing both a variety of maps and only focusing on one or two, but its just something I thought of.

As a very new TF2 player with less than 250 hours and only 1 time going to the Mixes I feel that more maps is not good. It's already overwhelming enough. The last COMP I was in was TFC ctf in STA I think. Hopefully this will do as you guys intend and spawn some new comp players. I'm already looking at more videos about roll outs and comms. Even looking in some DM servers and trying to practice that. Roll out and comms are the biggest thing for me now.

If you're that new to the game just practice on pubs (or dm/mge) and maybe lobbies. No point in clogging up the newbie mixes if you're really just new to the game. It should be for learning competitive, not just noobs who think they might later want to get into it.
edit: i cant spell

Newbie mixes were made so that you can learn comp I wouldn't tell someone to not do them just because they are really new that would completely defeat the purpose of newbie mixes

What.

The whole point of newbie mixes or for completely new, or close to completely new people to come learn how to play. If you're any more than that, you should be playing pugs, not newbie mixes.

PUBS. I can't spell. I meant to say just play pubs and get better at the game. I think if you're trying to get into competitive do newbie mixes but if you're totally new to the game you shouldn't do it, practice on mge or dm, or just normal pubs. My point is that you should practice on normal servers, its stupid to just have a bunch of f2ps who can't even do well on public servers trying to do newbie mixes.
