skyrideHey man, I worked in a computer repair shop for about 2 years, so I should be able to help you out here. :)
So bassically your laptop lid consists the LCD panel itself which has 2 metal bars either side screwed on to it, and these are connected to the main hinge. What's happened here is simply that the LCD panel has been cracked internally. It's a fairly common thing, and aside from possible damage to your hard disk due to the drop, the rest of the laptop is 100% fine which we know simple because it still turns on and boots up. Make sure to ask them to check the hard drive while they're at it. Any good shop should do this anyway as a matter of process (if for no other reason they might have the opportunity to charge you for a new hard disk too), but it doesn't hurt to ask.
The only problem I can see is that as you say, its a 1600x900 display and those are usually pretty expensive compared to the regular 1366x768 displays you see on most laptops these days, but I just had a quick look on ebay and it seems the particular model that laptop uses isn't too bad. They're about $70 inc postage for me to the UK (from the US), so I'd expect your parts cost to be something in the region of $80-100. I know labour cost we'd usually charge about £40-50, but that's a little on the pricey side, so convert that to dolla and you're probably expecting a bit less than that.
As for particular shops, I obviously can't recommend anything better than what Bubba here helpfully linked, but that should give you a ballpark on cost. :)
The screen is actually a 1980x1080 display but I make tf2 go windowed and 1600x900 so i can move it wherever. How would those price?

So a while ago part of my laptop screen got smashed and I don't know what actually is broken. Maybe the LCD?
Just today, my laptop was in its bag but it feel a good two feet on its side and I didn't notice the indention until I got home. The power button is still working and the tiny dots (speakers) still work fine. The hinge is rotating properly too.
I just play tf2 with 1600x900 and drag the window down so the static-y part doesn't overlap.
So I have two questions:
1. Where can I repair my laptop in the NYC area? Any recommendations? Preferably Queens but I can take it elsewhere.
2. What is that static-y part of my screen called? Is there a name? A broken LCD, or what is it?

Is it a setting one would usually want set to a different number, or just another crappy default?
I forgot what 0 does but at 2 you render with multicore. Basically meaning for gameplay you would use this option, as fps configs do, for frames (lol redundant).
I believe 0 is a synchronous single thread, but don't take it for sure.

Try out for a UGC 6s team in either steel or silver so you can get some practice against coordinated teams and get some more dm practice. 80 hours of scout and 80 pugs isn't enough to even do decently in low open.

a season of open is worth so much more than a season of UGC 6s as far as getting better.
I can see and I deeply appreciate your sentimental worry for me - and if that's not what you are intending then correct me - but man, we haven't played together in a month dude. And when we did, it was for spy. What do you know besides what you're most likely going to say - that I played in a mix on Ruwin's stream?

Why...? Sorry to seem antagonistic but it's never fun to have a really good play come in and carry their team and roll the other. Especially when it's #tf2mix.
joddthe biggest things i have noticed is having a combo that literally doesn't communicate at all, or medics that are just flat out clueless. both can ruin a game quite quickly.

To add onto that, one of the most hair-ripping things that happens once in a while is when usually two, sometimes three people that all know each other come in and play combo (most of the time pocket med) and assume that they can isolate all the other four.
I've always been using #tf2mix for the past month or so. I certainly agree that some mixes are ruined by offclassing people that often don't do much, and end up dying after getting rushes. A lot of the time it's quite frustrating cause they can't get a pick anyways, therefore allowing the other team to push on your *useless* offclass.
I wasn't here for the establishment of #tf2mix, but I know that in #tf2.mix.nahl, the whole point of its creation was to help people get better. I'm assuming that in #tf2mix, the point of it is to create an area where not as seasoned people can play, but I have to say that when you have a team member that is oblivious it is annoying.
To address your point of people QF'ing: it's ridiculously irritating - especially when the medic does it for the sole purpose of fun.
Also, some of the time, people seem to just sit in IRC added up, go do something else for an hour, and then come back realizing they got picked. People can accept that, but it gets on nerves after multiple times.
Apologies for the rant but most of this is just the irritating stuff.
