I need a video editor for a non gaming thing. The Only requirement is that it can do a split screen effect pretty much, and doesn't cost a shit ton of money.

davinci resolve 12 is pretty good for a free video editor (if it's still free), and i would imagine it has split-screen capabilities as well

While I don't necessary condone torrenting, I do have to agree with #5. If that's not something you feel like you want to or need to do, then ignore his and my comment.

You could get video editor programs like Sony Vegas Pro 13, or Adobe Premiere Pro, but those programs take a some-what amount of time to learn, and you need to pirate them, or find a free one off Youtube. And you can google tutorials online to find out how to move video clips into a split screen effect or whatever else you need

Would highly recommend Sony Vegas although as people have said it takes time to learn how to use it properly.

This is pretty on point, especially now that cc is a thing and you don't need to pay for upgrades every time adobe updates their software suites. I bought the production suite (ps, ae, premiere, etc.) cs5 in 2010 and less than a year later when they released cs5.5 and planned for cs6 I realized that they wanted me to pay a couple hundred bucks to upgrade (with no student discounts) on top of the ~$500 I had already paid. Needless to say this was when I started pirating their products. Now with the 'creative cloud' you can just pay the same monthly price and no extra charge going from cc 2014 to 2015 for example. So if you buy it now it will last more than a year before going obsolete, which is pretty nice.
