stuff like that usually happens when you alt tab too much, used to mess up the rocket trails for me, it would be really choppy looking and a lot darker than usual. not that distracting but yeahhhh

Echoing above post, but can also be in part to valve being annoying and messing up the "violence" cvars in a recent patch, which should allow you to remove blood/etc so there would be practically no particle effect, which now actually shows really annoying sparks.

They're default off in chris' configs, so if you don't want the annoying sparks (and want blood instead of them), turn these to 1.
