I assume that they are mostly pubbers, with vague senses of competitive. They chooses highlander probably because it is more recognizable to pubs, it has the classes that they enjoy playing in pubs, or they know about it through people who are highlander players but prevalent in the pub communities like stabby. /r/tf2 is meant for tf2 in general, so don't expect in-depth discussion about the game or serious posts.
