Well I dunno about you but for me the guy in the video doesn't really looks like he feels confident in what they are doing.
To be honest though, they cater to the casual/actual playerbase now that they realized that there isn't really that much interest in pro-competitive Overwatch (its still bigger than TF2, I know)
I'm not saying this is a bad thing, however gimmicky gamemodes won't create a dedicated playerbase. It's a shooter, and they should focus on making the game itself better because it has flaws and because a slowly increasing minority of the playerbase is barely touching the game anymore. I don't wan't to play a tracer race, I don't want to participate in an ana/widowmaker target shooting contest and I don't want to compete in a genji tennis match. This is nonsense, the difference between TF2 "seasonal" events and Overwatch seasonal events is that TF2 still retains the features of a FPS on halloween. I didn't buy TF2 for pass time, I didn't buy GTA V to play golf and I simply didn't buy Overwatch for the developers to shift some of their attention on creating tons of virtual sports-sim-events and other gimmicky sub-gamemodes which stray away from the original genre of the game.
