Can you plug your headphones into another device to see whether the problem is with your headphones or with your computer?

#30 Procrastinating in Off Topic

The day after I posted this thread I've felt a bit of a confidence boost with regards to overcoming my procrastination habit thanks to some of your guys' advice. I managed to spend some time reading for pleasure by changing my environment and not doing so in my room, and I managed to dedicated some 3 hours to focused music listening today, which is usually 2/3 more than I usually get on a school day. I still spent some time using social media, but I limited it to when I was idle or had a few minutes to spare whilst I waited for something. I didn't let social media soak up a lot of my time today, so that's a big improvement :)

Since this is only my 3rd week of school, we haven't been assigned any big tasks, but I still didn't really make the time to do the smaller school-related things today like organizing my shit, etc... Still after one day of trying to get rid of my procrastination habit I've felt that I've shown myself I can overcome this with some more focus and dedication.

eeereccing ^ Ciggs/ vapes / shit that you can do every couple hours to take breaks. if you get in the habit, it helps workflow a ton cause you dont burn out as quick and it's less miserable, so you dont end up psyching yrself out on starting the next thing

I get the idea of a reward system and having something to sort of unwind with for the odd 5 minutes every few hours of work. Still I think people in my situation can do a lot better than cigarettes/vapes/whatever. Coffee/tea/snacks are just healthier than resorting to cigarettes, even if cigarettes do calm you down and relax you. If you're already a smoker tho then ye by all means.

I'm super super happy for you that you're able to excel in your schoolwork thanks to Adderall! As you said though, it works differently for everybody, and I must add that it isn't a one-size-fits-all solution to those with difficulties focusing. I will certainly not be considering it as an option because my procrastination habits are a personality issue of mine, and not due to a chemical imbalance in my brain.

#1 Procrastinating in Off Topic

I've had this serious procrastination problem where I waste a lot of time doing things like browsing social media (facebook , insta), watching endless amounts of youtube videos and browsing tftv. Problem is I even procrastinate on things I actually enjoy doing like reading for pleasure or focused music listening or practising the guitar. I get really comfortable with just lazing about on social media on my phone or pc, even though I'm conscious I'll probably enjoy the aforementioned activities more.

I could really do with some advice as to how to stop sinking so much time into these distractions

#10 I created a 24/7 ULTIMATE 2fort server :) in TF2 General Discussion
eddie_calderonif you want to call someone "disgusting" at least consider their viewpoint, rather than try to compare a pub server rotation to an ultiduo tournament and say they are equally appreciable here.

I will never not consider someone who uses cancer as a means of demeaning or offending someone else as disgusting

#7 I created a 24/7 ULTIMATE 2fort server :) in TF2 General Discussion
VisdrhydraFeel free to come and get cancer from this ultimate compilation of TF2 2fort!

Why would you just go ahead and dismiss the efforts OP made out of his own pure will and love for the game? And in such an outrageously rude and offensive fashion too?

How would it make you feel if somebody just told you that participating in your Ultiduo tournaments would lead to getting cancer? Do you think it'd be fun if after taking all the time, and going through all the effort, hassles and difficulties in creating and hosting an ultiduo tournament, somebody just dismissed all your efforts simply because they didn't like the ultiduo gamemode? Okay it's cool that you don't like 2Fort, but for fucks sake, is discouraging community contributors really what we need in this game???

Knowing you, you will probably reply trying to defend or justify your position or actions. I'm telling you right now that doing so will only give away how truly insensitive and disgusting you really are towards community contributors like yourself. I suggest you choose your words carefully.

#6 Questions about Nietzsche and Heidegger in Off Topic
deykuzor

Very good explanation on the Nietzsche question, and whilst I feel like I have an understanding of the point you made when explaining Heidegger, I don't feel like it actually answers my question of "what did he mean by saying that language is spoken through us?" Though maybe I understand it less than I think I do?

#1 Questions about Nietzsche and Heidegger in Off Topic

Hello

I'm studying Nietzsche and Heidegger amongst other philosophers for A level philosophy (lol) and need some points cleared up. It's a Sunday and school is closed so I cannot hunt down my lecturers but my mind is BRISTLING for knowledge

  1. If Nietzsche goes on to deny nihilism/teach us to overcome it, why does he base his philosophy on nihilism in the first place? Is it coming from the notion that Christianity is life-denying and that therefore it is the only conclusion that nihilism is the case a priori? Or am I missing something?

  2. My lecturer told us that Heidegger says that humans are merely language machines, and that "language is spoken through us" - that language is not a man-made thing and has always been there, and we are simply machines with the purpose of formulating grammatically correct sentences, and we do not convey any meaning when speaking a sentence. I had difficulty understanding this at first but I tried coming up with a sort of allegory to perhaps help me understand this:
Taking the example of a drummer playing the drums. Each tom, snare, cymbal, etc, is already there on his drumkit. Furthermore, the sound each piece makes is already defined by the physical properties of each piece on the kit. The sound is already there, it is not man-made per se. The drummer therefore is not making the sound. The drummer is simply a means through which the sound is conveyed. The drummer simply acts as a machine that formulates these pre-defined sounds such that they end up sounding good.

Does this example/allegory make sense or am I off by a longshot? If so, I could really do with some clarification on what Heidegger meant by all this.

Thank you in advance to whoever can help me out :)
