4nrHaven't seen Grado mentioned yet, so I'll throw Grado SR80s out there as a suggestion. They are over the ear as opposed to full sound-canceling. Easily the best headphones I've used for the price:sound quality ratio.
Grados are open-back and have narrow soundstage. They don't really fit the description.

they're not uncomfortable unless you have big ears (which unfortunately rules them out for me)

I use AKG's k702. These are really good headphones, but need an amp to really shine. I know they are more than your budget, but if you get these you'd be set forever.
Those are open back so unsuitable for his application. Also the Q701s are better for gaming afaik.

ATH-M50s are a decent alternative, bit more bass and less of a spacious soundstage compared to the CAL!s. M50s are less portable than the CAL!s in that they are considerably larger.
