Don't restrain yourself to saving up for a car, remember that public transportation exists in metropolitan areas (even if it is shit in the US). Even if it meant relocating to a new area, you could still end up saving a lot of money. An unlimited rail/bus pass will always be cheaper than owning a car. Plus, you'd have the resources of a big city at your disposal.
