The unique sub-genres of anime and the actual amount of different animation, music and storytelling styles in the current anime canon makes it a medium rather than a genre. Look at an anime like Kaiba or sayonara zetsubou sensei and compare it to something like kill la kill or attack on titan or anything else animated similarly. They share almost nothing in common aside from being called "anime". Umbrellaing all these different styles and series and saying it's a genre rather than a medium??? smh
