Platinum had the mechanic updates of gen 4 without being as much of a mess as Diamond/Pearl, its definitely my favorite. The Gen 2 remakes are also really good as well for the same reason, and they have the extra region. I have actually replayed a lot of the pokemon games, and honestly they do age decently well but I can find it in myself to admit that the new gen 6+ games are a fair bit better. That said, HG/SS and Platinum are still feel like they are the best the series has to offer. I am looking forward to when something of equivalent value comes out on modern systems.
