#31 huds.tf in Customization

So after a couple of feedback comments about the site's design, a lot of it was aimed towards the top of the page; mainly the blue area being too big and taking up too much space.

Here's a new style for the top bar

Unfortunately, it sacrifices the info bubble because space is needed for longer page names, but it's not a huge deal, and being honest it was ripping off tf2center anyway. I also made a new footer which I'm actually going to implement anyway.

Feedback feedback pleaserino.

#24 huds.tf in Customization
hanbroloI wrote a guide for the site; I understand its purpose (and its usefulness).

My point was that someone who says "what is this hud edit?" often gets pointed to the hud modifications thread and therefore the home of competitive tf2. An extra forum on huds.tf is just unnecessary.

I'm not sure you read the entire OP/understood what part of it I was referring to. None of your post gives any justification for a forum on huds.tf as opposed to the current setup of a subforum that is basically dominated by huds and configs anyway. I can see the benefit to centralizing huds discussion of course, but it's basically already centralized here (ETF2L too I guess) so moving an already established huds subsection doesn't make sense.

The reason I brought up the idea of a forum is for a discussion base for anything HUD related. Where as I understand that TF.TV and ETF2L both have these options available, and I don't necessarily want to take away what they both offer, not everybody in the TF2 community is interested enough in competitive TF2 to join a competitive community just to ask about HUDs.

I'm kind of thinking in the same vain as tf2maps.net; we get topics about maps here but they get different topics about maps there.

TF.TV also has this problem where threads are created asking about something that has been asked a million times before. But this isn't the problem, because this isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem is that some threads get no reply and a whole bunch of downvotes. I don't see that as being helpful to anybody with questions.

But, I haven't implemented forums yet because this is the kind of feedback that I'd like more of. So if anybody else has any thoughts on the matter, I'd love to hear them.

#1 huds.tf in Customization

So here we go friends, huds.tf is finally public! It's super exciting and I'm incredibly nervous about it, but there we go.
(If the "coming soon" page is still loading, refresh. CTRL + F5 will do it)

It's been a fair bit of work, although being honest, I've been lazy with the development until recently. The site has a bunch of new features which need to be explained, so let's get to it.

  • The HUDs listed on the home page are sorted randomly, although alphabetical sorting may come in the future depending on how much people care. Unfortunately, we have no good way of sorting HUDs by when they were last updated or by how popular they are. We're not looking into sorting them by popularity either, as it may be harmful to those with less popular HUDs. We want to give every HUD a chance, and we hope you do too.
  • HUDs also have their own pages, which give you in-depth information about the HUD you may be looking to use, including screenshots, operating system support, resolution support and customization options. Every HUD has also been given it's own custom URL, which means you can reach HUDs using a url like notohud.huds.tf or flathud.huds.tf, for example.
  • The Blog page is a new edition which we'll be using to get updates about HUD related stuff to the community, like the recent release of hudcreator.co.uk. We're also planning on releasing the blog to HUD editors, so they can push their HUD updates to the blog.
  • The Guide section is what it says it is. It's for HUD Guides. However, it's still a little barren. We're going to avoid "stealing" guides from other websites and either obtain our own, or gain proper permission for already existing guides, such as Rays' Video Tutorials.
  • The HUD Archive is also what it says it is. But to go into greater detail, the HUD Archive is a list of HUDs that are either out of date, or maybe not fully submitted to us to gain their own huds.tf page. You can find a full explaination on the Archive Page.

You can still submit HUDs to the site, but more information is required than the previous information needed for tf2huds.net. There is also a Guide Submission form on site too, rather than messaging me on Steam about them.

We're still working on 4plug support (which should be coming really soon) and we've been toying around with the idea of forums, but we'll leave this to your feedback. Would you like to have HUD specific forums, or leave it down to TF.TV to fill that need? Does huds.tf having forums seem necessary for the entire TF2 community?

I want to give a huge thanks to tstm for all his hard work on the site design and the very few people that got to see the site before release for giving feedback.

Now I'm going to sit here in fear.

Thanks friends

#80 TF2HUDS.net in Customization

Okay, it's update time once again.

So, we've got a release date. Or, a release window, rather. It's really, really soon (before i52 because I bought huds.tf shirts for me and Gubbins to wear at LAN and I'm not wearing the shirt if it's not released), but I'm not going to say what exact date we have in mind, just in case.

However, I need one thing doing before release, and that's a HUD Installation guide for Mac and Linux. It doesn't have to be massively detailed, it just needs explaining to newer HUD users. Pictures would also be nice. I don't really want to have to steal someone else's guide from the internet, so I'm going to ask here. If one of you lovely people would volunteer your knowledge, that'd be fucking awesome.

----------------------------

Here's some bits for people who are interested:
Lookit a picture
HUDs on the home page are now randomized. No longer does it look like favoritism. Download notohud.

The HUD Archive is a new thing that I thought of in my sleep because apparently I can't dream without it relating to HUDs. It's basically the same thing tf2huds.net is: a list of HUDs with screenshots and downloads. It's got a few HUDs on there that are still currently updated, but haven't been submitted. When those HUDs get submitted to the main site, they'll be removed from the Archive. However, most of the HUDs on the list are outdated, some of them by at least 3 years. The aim of the Archive is to allow people access to these HUDs to update them for their own use, or redistribution. A lot of good HUDs have gone unsupported, and I think this would be a good way of getting some updates in them. Maybe.
HUD Archive wow

The Blog is as what it is. A blog. This will be used to keep people up to date with huds.tf updates and news surrounding HUDs, including any TF2 updates that may affect custom HUDs. I'm also planning on giving HUD developers the chance to use this to push updates about their HUDs. This will be based completely on the response I get from HUD devs, however.

The Guides pages still need work, I'm going to be honest here. I'll clean them up in the next few days, but the formatting is still fucking ugly. We've got a few guides on the site, with more to come soon (I'm hoping, anyway). I won't post a picture of what the guide pages look like, but here's the homepage.
Guides! Whaaaaat

All the submission pages are now integrated on the site, which means no more Google Forms. Fantastic. As well as contacting us and submitting HUDs, you can now submit guides using this method as well, which means less for me to catch up to on Steam when I get online. These forms may need a little touching up in terms of design, but they work, and that's fine by me.

There's not many other features I have in mind at the moment, other than having a latest updated list of HUDs on the home page, but that's currently not possible to achieve. I've canned the idea of a "most popular" ordered list, as this may end up destructive rather than constructive for some HUD developers. I've also thought about implementing forums to huds.tf, but I'm on the fence about it as I like the TFTV forums for HUD related discussion.

Of course, when the site gets going, I'll be looking forward to all feedback and implementing some of the ideas you guys might have.

Thanks friends.

Thanks omni, this might sound a bit weird but, could I add you for a question or two?

I have a tendency of ignoring a lot of steam messages, so if you want to risk me not answering you for days, go ahead.

Here you go. Word of warning: nobody fucks with them because they're difficult to work with. I'm not even sure if the replayperformanceeditor folder is even worth touching; I just added it because it was there.
