i get there's a difference between Harvard and Kalamazoo Community College, but why do people apply to 15 different decent schools that all give the same piece of paper???

Better schools get better rep with employers and you apply to multiple good schools in case you get declined.

This isn't communism man, you voluntarily donated for them to go. If it's a waste to you then you should not have donated to them.
People donated with the valid assumption that Chess Club actually cared about going and doing well.
