#61 The Steam Universe is Expanding in 2014 in Off Topic
ErenJayI don't get it. Is it like intel's ultrabook thing, where anyone can make a laptop that meets intels guidelines, then call it an ultrabook?
Also, how many different types of steambox do they want? If the base model doesn't get 60fps 1080p on the games it's released with then it's stupid, and if it does, then what else do you need?

Not everyone plays Skyrim and Crysis, some people play Binding of Isaac or Fez or CS 1.6. For those people, a low end, 99 dollar Steam Machine would be perfect. Seeing as its an open platform and the FAQ makes it very clear you are free to change the machine to your liking, you can upgrade it as you see fit.

#42 IT'S COMING in TF2 General Discussion

Its a Linux distro, it will be open-source, at least everything except the Steam overlay. Its basically going to be an optimized Linux distro that boots into Big Picture.

#22 windoes 8 and tf2 in TF2 General Discussion

There only seems to be small issues with Win8 and TF2, but using the OS in general is a pain. I personally switched to Linux Mint over Win8, and I ended up having better performance in-game then I did in Windows, Mumble works perfectly too. Wouldn't suggest it if you play in ESEA though, because they refuse to put out a Linux client.

#7 Thermal Paste in Hardware

I've personally grown pretty fond of Tuniq TX-2, it gets a couple degrees more then AS5, and its pretty easy to work with. Cheap too.

#10 Looking to build a computer. in Hardware

I was gonna make a list, but Twitch Johns list is pretty good. I'm personally more a fan of Gigabyte motherboards (dual BIOS is a life saver) and Corsair PSUs, but in general its a solid list and I would recommend it.

#7 Cheapish build thread. in Hardware

A lot of people seem to be missing that the AMD CPU linked isn't a CPU, its an APU, a CPU/GPU combo. That said, its not a very good one.

Theres a few things wrong with your build link. One, its on an old socket, FM1, when the A series APUs are on FM2. APUs rely HEAVILY on RAM speed, as its just a GPU core with the CPU, it uses the standard system memory, DDR3, which is much slower then most graphics cards GDDR5. You'll gain a good 15-20 FPS on just upgrading the RAM speed to 2133 or so. Unfortunately, I don't believe you can buy 2133 below 8GB, so I would go for at least 1866 in this Kingston HyperX stick.

You need to go FM2 to have better performance per dollar and upgrade possibilities, I would suggest the ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M. For the APU, the FM2 version of what you have on that list is the A4-4000, but honestly both are absolute garbage chips and really not THAT much better then your laptop. Better, yes, but I honestly don't know if its enough to even bother spending the money on. I would suggest taking a step up and getting the A6-6400K, a nice middle ground between the bottom of the barrel (A4-4000) and the A-Series flagship, the A10-6800k.

EDIT POST: The tf.tv forum linking is absolute garbage, so here is the above APU list:

A4-4000: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113343 (dual core)
A6-6400k: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113335 (dual core)
A10-6800k: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113331 (quad core)

I would say look over the entire FM2 APU line to fine whats right for you. Theres a few quad-cores for cheap with decent GPUs on them, look them over and find what price is right for you.
