#175 The Mouse/Mousepad Thread (last updated Sep. 9, 2013) in Hardware

Any good budget mice (up to $50) with no accel? Was looking at the G100S but reviews say it has a problematic left click. Is Ninox Aurora worth it?

Datasmaller tourney stuff

Very interesting idea, I quite like the "karma" idea for more things than the tournament, possibly gear or games could be an incentive?

I could see karma being implemented as a League of Legends type thing where after you play a game, you can report players on the other team for good or bad behavior (mad in chat, bad sportsmanship, bad teamwork, etc) and they would receive or lose karma for those things (respectively).

#3 Educating the masses in TF2 General Discussion

The problem wasn't hitting a bind. It was having a link period. Even attempts to ask them to go to the steam guide on my profile or add me (without giving links) were rebuffed by the high horse responses.

#1 Educating the masses in TF2 General Discussion

Using the playcomp.tf tag and asking about comp during pub games has netted me a total of 0 people adding me or asking about it and a total of 3 or 4 people saying that it was a phishing link, 2 people saying that I was an asshole, and 1 person looking it up and saying "it gave me viruses." Truly le master trole xD.

In my experience, asking people that you perceive to be skilled with a more congratulatory tone "hey, you're pretty good. have you tried comp tf2?" and then adding them has netted me 10 people, and after adding I've directed them to playcomp. This makes the success rate higher, since people can see me as being more trustworthy (esp. after seeing a real, non-private, tf2 geared profile) and as wanting them to succeed.

In my opinion, presenting a link first is not the best way to go, and starting off with a compliment plays to people's good side, increasing the chance that they believe you and educate themselves. Keeping playcomp in your name helps lend credibility as well.

Since switching strategy I've found a team for 3 people and talked to 5 more about finding a team. The other 2 said they didn't have time for it and had considered it before.

I suppose the main function of this post is a discussion on strategy for educating pubbers and the best ways to lend credibility to your actions without speaking from a high horse or appearing to be doing so.

#2 TF2 Discussion idea in TF2 General Discussion
PhaserI noticed when most of the serious comp TF2 players chime in, it seems a lot of other voices go unheard.

i get heard sometimes i guess

The main problem is interaction with people that don't know anything about comp TF2. If people know about it then the major content creators can put out something and that can solve the problem on that end, but the pubber attitude just isn't the same.

"pointing fingers will solve NOTHING."
"Looking at you smobo and ploxo."

bruh

I heard you liked pointing fingers
So I pointed fingers at your pointed fingers

Yeah, now I realize that I didn't phrase that well. Point still stands though, in-fighting will do us no good.

#52 New Perspective in TF2 General Discussion

wareya is completely correct.

I know I'm not one to talk, considering that I really am unknown in the competitive community (being a steel player and all), but I think that a good majority of the people that act high and mighty in pubs are either:

a) low level players that feel like they're better than everyone else because they've started playing comp (I've talked to several of these "bragging about comp" pubstompers and this is the majority of them)

or

b) pubstompers who never made it to comp due to their attitude

The "asshole comp player" is becoming a stereotype due to these players and all we have to do is create some outreach potential. Schedule some events with large server chains like Lotus and Skial, maybe a "comp player meetup", and show them how nice we can be. We don't have to be bound by these stereotypes. We also need to do some outreach to lower level players and make sure they know how to act in pubs and in the public view.

It's all well and good that we're promoting comp using the tags but players with experience against these "asshole comp players" will do their best to label you as another showoff to perpetuate their stereotype. Because of this, it'll get harder and harder to get people to join comp teams because they will keep seeing people say that comp players are assholes and end up agreeing without any evidence.

Again, not purporting to be above any of this (I have work to do as well), but this will probably be the best solution in the long run.
