HUD editing: short questions, quick answers

I'm trying to use a solid color image for my main menu background, but I can't get it to work. I put the files named background_upward.vtf and background_upward_widescreen.vtf in my_custom_stuff/materials/console and I used the following text in chapterbackground.txt:

}And put that file into the my_custom_stuff/scripts folder.
I also can't seem to remove the characters from my background, all the downloads for that seem to be outdated. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or if the method I'm using is outdated?

unskilledafter installing this, my mumble overlay broke.. is this a common problem?
I think the problem is usually anti aliasing, try to mess around with that.
This is what it says in comfig.cfg:

Vulcani knew a guy who gets 60 ping to chicago servers but it says 1 ping on the scoreboard
I think there's just a command to have 1 ping on scoreboard. I don't remember what it was but I think the lowest possible ping without any commands is 5.

I had this with my whole steam folder once, which meant that I couldn't install updates or remove steam. What fixed it for me was to just go in safe mode and delete everything. Don't forget to copy all the files that you still want to avoid losing settings. Another solution is to re-install TF2 in a different folder or disk.
