#130 all aboard in TF2 General Discussion

I think getawhale's overall point is related to him pointing to the fact that this is all still a work-in-progress, but I don't think that means this discussion isn't worthwhile; after all, most ppl here know nearly every command that's objectively better on a certain setting, so it's good for us to point out what should be up by default. (and really, I think that a big TFTV-made wishlist that's spread on reddit and to valve would do wonders, but I'm no community manager so I could be talking out of my ass)

since this is kind of wishlist discussion to new players anyways:

-in-game tips should be heavily updated, focused so it only talks about the things the player can currently do with their class and loadout, and then show up every respawn. if possible, make it context-heavy; did a player die from afterburn when you had a mad milk in your loadout? point out that it can douse the flames.

-going into more detail on what popcorp said on default weapons, there is not a melee default that isn't outclassed by another melee weapon. this is especially jarring because, unlike other weapon slots (wherein they will likely be as stylized as their default counterparts), the melee defaults look plain and boring compared to anything else:

at the very least, defaults should be either tossed out with varying different melee weapons becoming default, but more preferably, defaults should be redesigned.

-the advanced options menu is a massive mess. make it a properly tabbed menu, like how the current options menu already looks, so people who don't want to do a bunch of CFG bullshit can still quickly modify settings.

thought about random crits: they were made in a time where every class has solely one weapon per slot, and that was valve's attempt to add "randomness", in an artificial way. modern-day TF2 doesn't need a forced randomness, however, because the sheer number of weapons you need to take into account, you're already playing a guessing game that would fit the requirement without issue

there's a reason random crits have been more and more frustrating over the years, after all. it was never fun to begin with, but walking right into a class with a high-damage unlock that crits before you have time to react is significantly worse

GetawhaleMaybe we shouldn't be trying as hard to force our way into these very preliminary tests

If Valve had a product they were ready for us to see, they'd show it to us

I can understand wanting to know more. I want to just as much as the next person. But my fear is people start posting about bugs, or things that will be changed eventually, or server problems, or whatever, and the HYYYPE TRAIN just starts tearing it apart and destroying it before it's even released

if such issues are a problem, couldn't OP just put a warning on the first post that says this can all potentially change?

like, if you are a hacker and you are willing to idle for 100+ hours, then I feel like playing a filter gamemode wouldn't really stop you any harder, idk

StaticVoidm4risai cant wait to get destroyed by cheatersperhaps require a premium TF2 account to play MM? I mean, it wouldn't stop all cheaters, but it would stop people from just making account after account.

there's already confirmation that you're going to require some form of pass to get into matchmaking

if you type in "OpenMatchmakingLobby ladder" in console, you'll often get an error telling you that you need a pass, but for some odd reason random users can get in fine

Hellbentgames too broken to balance everything without class limits and weapon bans

weapon setups can be solved in a lot of ways, since if you look at weapons like the winger valve is clearly willing to redesign an entire concept if it works out. class limits are going to be required, but I feel like valve isn't going to take the 6s limits of "2 on some, 1 on everyone else" and will likely want a flat limit to apply to everyone, just for the sake of cleanliness, and idk how a 1-class-limit 6s would look like in the long term

it's going to be crap

it could be a miserable experience for the first few months, but that's not wholly a bad thing long-term. people have been telling TF2 players this for years, if you want to tell valve that all of these things are busted and broken, show them. some of the weapon bans in 6s are so outdated, you can't even get a clear answer as to why they're banned, much less an example, and should it be as bad as you presume, valve will be getting a lot of examples

and that's not my pessimism talking

if you have to say this in context of giving out opinions over pure speculation, then yes, it probably is your pessimism talking

honestly, of all the popular maps valve could pretty up for matchmaking, just tossing out the last stage of dustbowl and making balance adjustments from there, it wouldn't be all that bad of a map

certainly a lot better than when every new mapmaker thinks they can "rebalance" 2fort

sombrezalso, matchmaking isn't really competitive
if it was truely competitive then you would only be allowed to play with a real organized team

it's not supposed to be "truely competitive", it's supposed to be a way to bridge the gap between pubs and competitive more officially, which it will likely do

MankyWere there item bans?
Did you get any info?

idk why you'd think valve would ever actively ban the things that people buy and get them money for on their brand new money-making concept

how well does cp_well actually play in 6s? I used to see frag videos in it all the time but I've never actually seen a full math on it

plain old valve servers. I kept re-testing on the same valve servers, but I can't find any way to reasonably reproduce it with the same HUD. it was just a weird single thing and it's still fine otherwise, mind, I just wanted to point out a weird potential quirk in case someone else also gets it

#60 This recent wave of "donation drives" in TF2 General Discussion

the actual issue is less in the act of donations, and moreso the question of honestly. I can see why people might be a bit critical about it; a long time ago (like, back when people still willingly used ustream), I know of someone that did a donation drive for a new laptop since their old one broke, except they then heavily lied to ustream admins that they were donating it all to a children's hospital so they could be front-paged and it was the most scumbag tactic I've ever seen.

I hope nobody's as terrible here, though. so long as you're informed into where your donation's going, and that's truly where it goes, what's the issue?

using the health bar, sometimes this happens when I enter some servers, and it doesn't go away until I restart. fiddled with most of my settings, nothing really affects it (I assumed it was maybe radeonpro's fault, but the health bar will still come up normally when it's on), not sure what specifically makes it happen.

I should've gotten a screenshot for this, too, but weirdly, the number will actually come back when you're at full HP--but only then. if you take dmg or get an overheal, it disappears again

granted, this has been a thing for dx9 since gun mettle came out, I don't know why it'd specifically apply to this update
