#1 MM small changes wishlist in TF2 General Discussion

thinking about a recent update that let you choose a different hitsound for when you killed someone, there's a lot of small things in TF2 that make the game more accessible as a whole, with little to no downsides. I'd like to see what other neat little changes you could do. stuff that doesn't really modify the game heavily, just makes life easier for everyone involved.

-notifications somewhere on the screen that tell you when someone respawns, so you don't have to switch to scoreboard constantly to check when the enemy medic respawns and whatnot
-a hotkey to switch between the three resistances in vaccinator without cycling; like, you hold down +attack3, and press A, S or D for each of them
-a pre-game that lasts like five seconds in spawn before going to mid, so you don't have to care about spawn positions and can just hang out next to the door before the round begins

same core concept, really. the mortal kombat series was pretty horrendous for the entirety of the aughts, but they still sold well because they were incredibly casual and thus most people never noticed it inbetween the ten million ways you can horribly murder someone

making something that requires you to permanently emphasize playing to win while still being fun is fairly difficult. by comparison, TF2 until now has gotten away with fairly awful weapon design/balance because it was marketed towards casual players who wanted to conga line out of spawn and be a shit friendly heavy for the entire game, and when MM beta starts full steam ahead, I'm hoping people give it the same level of scrutiny so it can be better than that

super smash bros 4 was busted on launch. you could literally get infinites slowly carrying you to the blast zone from a jab. there wasn't much uproar, because ssb4 was designed as a fairly casual party game first and foremost, and by the time the competitive meta was moving those issues were fixed

street fighter 5 was busted on launch. the very core to the game was in its competitive-ready, 1vs1 format. it's now considered one of the most infamous launches of recent memory, because when you up the stakes in seriousness you're also upping the backlash whenever those serious games fuck up

TF2 can get the kind of response when MM comes around, and valve knows that, and thus they're trying to optimize everything they can feasibly get their hands on. OW is designed for competition, from the getgo, so it has to immediately be put under scrutiny

it's kind of trying to be TF2, but then all of the fundamental cores of TF2 are unrelated (entirely different ethos of balance, OW DM is fairly linear whereas TF2 heavily takes from arena shooters), but it still kind of wants to do the things TF2 does, so it's currently incredibly awkward

if it just dropped the pretense of "we're like TF2 guys, check out our payload mode and our engineer with 200 metal!" and went full steam ahead on being the fps moba crossover it really wants to be it'd be fine, but currently it feels like there's a constant compromise so comparisons to TF2 can still be made

also jesus christ is 20 ticks still a thing on those servers?

oh no, don't assume me to be pessimistic. I know how valve operates, they like data, and that means that, for the first phase of a semi-public beta, 6s MM is going to be incredibly messy (with the intent of it being far cleaner later on), and people need to know that it's inevitable, so people don't try and call for a poor valve employee's head when someone figures out that a quick fix'd heavy is pretty good

there's no banlists. widowmaker/gunslinger engineer is allowed. tomislav/sandvich/GRU heavy is allowed. shortstop/crit-a-cola/atomizer scout is allowed. shit, for at least the first month, three scouts two demomen and a medic is allowed. there is not a single thing that you've seen in competitive 6s that will start off as wild as this will
