fnmExcellent job. I think you would like/enjoy using micarta in in handlemaking in stuff, its fun to work with.

thx

i have looked at micarta and the only reason i didnt use it was because i had this wood on hand, but ill probably make some home made micarta scales for the next ones i make from some fabric or colored paper

Cryptoneeds a cheesy video of you effortlessly slicing onions and shearing paper in half

joking aside this is really cool and looks really cleanly done

hehe those videos are pretty satisfying though

this one isnt sharpened yet, i have a lansky knife sharpening kit but i have not had the time to sharpen it

pine_beetleWhat did you do for heat treatment?

heated passed the point where the steel loses magnetivity, then quench in 120-130 F motor oil

after that you bake at 400 F for 2 hours

rowpiecesif you haven't seen green beetle, you should. he makes knives out of a bunch of different things, it's pretty interesting.

i pretty much learned everything from youtube, and i've come accross his channel during that time, he is pretty awesome indeed

#1 i made my first knife (and second) in Off Topic

i decided to make a knife and took some photos along the way, thought some might find these interesting, i had a lot of fun making it (apparently tftv doesnt like vertical pictures so it turned them ;/ )

the knife is from 01 tool steel, not sure what the wood is
(i also started a second knife and added some photos of that one below as well)

edit: both knives finished and next to each other

final product:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0365.JPG

pictures along the way:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0296.JPG

i used a hacksaw and other hand tools:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0301.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0302.JPG

finished hacking and filing the edges:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0303.JPG

i used a home made filing jig i saw on youtube for the bevel:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0310.JPG

finished bevel:

drilling out the handle to make the knife balanced:

after sanding to 600 grit ready for heat treating:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0320.JPG

home made forge also learned from youtube:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0322.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0323.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0326.JPG

after quenching in oil it comes out nice and gritty:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0328.JPG

there was a slight bend in the blade after quenching so i straightened it out when i took it out of the over after tempering the blade

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0330.JPG

final satin finish:

fitting the handle scales:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0334.JPG

ready to epoxy:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0335.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0337.JPG

starting to contour the handle:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0341.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0343.JPG

and final finished product:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0351.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0350.JPG

the second knife in progress, i started it on friday and i just heat treated and quenched it tonight

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0353.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0354.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0356.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0357.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0358.JPG

i decided to spend less time on the weight of the handle, so i just drilled a bunch of holes to accomplish the same effect as filing out the handle like on the first one

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0360.JPG

ready for heat treating:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/78898876/knife/IMG_0361.JPG

after heat treat:

#8 Shattered Skies in Other Games

it seems like the devs have got it right this time, granted end game is a bit stale

this is like warZ 3.0, and hopefully the devs will stay on the right course throughout development

only time will tell
