I will say the faceit pug was pretty fun. Wasn't as good since something was messed up in my discord and I couldn't hear anyone, but it was still super fun to play

flatlinedo you think every time i have to play ORLY (top 100 player) at my melee weekly i just resign it away? no, i get excited because i get to see how better i've become since the last time, i get to see how he plays and adapts. same thing here.

another thing: whenever there's some sort of prize on the line of course top players will be playing. faceit isn't really meant as a platform where you can just get friends together and dick around, nor is it really meant to introduce players to competitive. it's somewhere inbetween TF2Center and ESEA; not really a league, but not just a super pick-up-and-play experience.

also, faceit has ranks and such so things like this should iron out over time anyway

Like I said; nice concept, doesn't address the problem. I'm not denying that people who want to be good are okay with losing repeatedly, badly, and often. Good on you for being one of those people. But a lot of the people trying to play on Faceit right now will play a few games, get matched up against people leagues above their own for each one, be forced to deal with one salty teammate after another, and just move back to whatever other game service they're more comfortable with. It'd be lovely if there were a shitload of people playing TF2 right now who shared that attitude you have, but it remains to be seen whether there are enough to sustain a service like Faceit right now. Judging from what appears to have happened with Razer, there aren't. It'd be helpful if some effort was made for a little bit to accommodate people who aren't invite.

what problem are you talking about? people getting rolled? why are they playing faceit? faceit isn't supposed to be for new players

side note: the fix for this is DEFINITELY not limiting top players, it's creating ranks and doing placement matches. it will even out as players increase; faceit's job isn't to increase the playerbase, it's to give those players who get introduced through other avenues a chance to compete in a semi-serious environment

Does anyone know if Faceit will be adding a way to sign up for a specific class? As it is right now I see no reason for people like me, who are not going to win anything in the ladders or the cups unless we are carried, to play this instead of tf2center or mixchamp. If anything, this system is actually worse than what we already have.

MenachemILLEGALELEPHANTGUNattn: low level players
you can play against noobs all day and stay inside your comfort zone and maybe slightly increase your own level of play, or you can step outside your comfort zone and get smashed by pros and learn new stuff. its called adaptation. eventually, those pros arent going to be rolling you as easily because you will become a more competent opponent. i mean shit its not like its a real life fight where your life is in danger, its a video game. just take the beating and try to learn from it and be grateful that good players are still playing this game.

thats a nice concept

but it doesnt actually keep people playing the game

Getting rolled is demoralizing to a lot of people, but if you're truly a competitive person, you should never let it negatively affect you; it should be inspiration to improve, no matter what. It was for me and is for the majority of pros in every game. Also, losing to anyone makes competitive people want to prove themselves or their team.

This concept applies to every game and sport that's big. It's just that there's less reason for those types of people to play tf2 a bunch and improve.

QasistDoes anyone know if Faceit will be adding a way to sign up for a specific class?

If the community really wants something like that they might consider it. Suggest it in the #feedback channel on the discord.

in a doc some of us put together at the start when faceit announced TF2 support we mention adding up as certain classes. We left the decision up to them if they wanted to include it in their site

Faceit wants their ladder to be similar to competitive but the ladder itself is a matchmaking ladder. For cs:go this was never an issue but for TF2 where matchmaking is very different from actual competitive this is more difficult to balance. Perhaps this is why they decided to not have class preferences. It's matchmaking but in a competitive environment.

Though I do like being able to add up only as the classes I'm comfortable playing I think we need to realise sacrifices will have to be made if we want TF2 to take off as an esport. I'm fine with playing medic/demo every now and then if it gives me a middleground between matchmaking and competitive in return
But like I said: Suggest it in the discord. If people agree Anakk might look into it

Alright, I think FaceIt is approaching TF2 in the wrong way. PUG sites are the response to a problem(the lack of a good matchmaking system) rather than being an actual desire by the community. If you actually want to convince the community to embrace the platform, promote the shit out of your ladders.

The reason that invite players are queuing into pugchamp isn't because the captain system is the best way to play video games, its instead because they're almost always going to have these 3 things.

  1. A very high chance of being able to play games with minimal time in between

  2. A Pretty high chance of teams being balanced

  3. The ability to only play the classes you want

An ELO system actually fixes all of these problems just as well, if not better, provided there is enough players in the system so that elo variations actually matter.

If I'm FaceIt, I try and get out of Beta as fast as possible. I then try and make laddering as simple to do as possible. I want as causal as a player as possible to feel like they're going to be able to queue up and HAVE FUN, so I can get as large of a userbase as possible.

I keep premium tournaments, but make them weekend only, and use them to test different formats. If you provide people a reward for playing different variations of 6v6 TF2, you let people who are lower ranked feel they have a chance to win some games they might not normally win. I'm not worried about the top tier of players not playing these, because they have a chance for extra faceit points, and they're already having high level competition.

I'd then want to award the top% of of the highest ladder with FaceIt points, while the top % of lower ladders get moved up into the next ladder, while the bottom % gets moved down. You want it on a weekly basis, so that people don't feel there is a period in between resets that doesn't matter, while at the same time, allowing people enough time to play so that they don't feel ladder placing is random.

Overall, I know this is kinda out-there as an idea, but unlike tournaments, its at least not proven to fail.

micspamAlright, I think FaceIt is approaching TF2 in the wrong way.

Your lack of enthusiasm for change is one of the reasons why we're not getting big growth. B4nny went over it in a decent amount of detail in the first TF2esports podcast. He mentions how people in our scene aren't very susceptible to change. Even Tagg further emphasized this

Tagghaving your own little sandbox that you play in will not make the sandbox biggermicspamPUG sites are the response to a problem(the lack of a good matchmaking system) rather than being an actual desire by the community. If you actually want to convince the community to embrace the platform, promote the shit out of your ladders.

so using what tagg had mentioned, if we started a massive drive for people to queue up and play faceit pugs, then over the long run, better things would come from it.

micspamThe reason that invite players are queuing into pugchamp isn't because the captain system is the best way to play video games, its instead because they're almost always going to have these 3 things.
  • A very high chance of being able to play games with minimal time in between

  • A Pretty high chance of teams being balanced

  • The ability to only play the classes you want

Some of these things are SO EASY for a 3rd party source to code. I mean faceit already has ladders for multiple games right? So simply ctrl + c and ctrl + v with a few modifications and things will get better. But that's the initial tough period that we would have to experience before we would start getting bigger and better things.

micspam An ELO system actually fixes all of these problems just as well, if not better, provided there is enough players in the system so that elo variations actually matter.

This is arguably the hardest part about getting this thing to potentially work. If we can get the basically lifelong dedicated pugchamp people to switch over to what could be a great thing for our scene, then we are going to be able to go places.

micspam If I'm FaceIt, I try and get out of Beta as fast as possible. I then try and make laddering as simple to do as possible. I want as causal as a player as possible to feel like they're going to be able to queue up and HAVE FUN, so I can get as large of a userbase as possible.

We as a community need to set the example first then. Because once everyone sees people adding up to faceit pugs instead of tf2center/pugchamp/mixchamp/other lobby sites, more casual players are going to be more interested in learning how the competitive game is, further increasing the playerbase and publicity of competitive tf2.

micspamI keep premium tournaments, but make them weekend only, and use them to test different formats. This is just my personal thoughts, but maybe one random tournament (maybe making this playable for non-premiums and not the top % of the ladder) could encourage a lot of people to play, given that the tournament is done through a client for obvious anti-cheat purposes

micspam Overall, I know this is kinda out-there as an idea, but unlike tournaments, its at least not proven to fail.

if we have a hope with something like this as the end goal, maybe something like this is worth the drive to get more people to play this new platform that has been more than generous to invest their time and resources into our game.

Your lack of enthusiasm for change is one of the reasons why we're not getting big growth. B4nny went over it in a decent amount of detail in the first TF2esports podcast. He mentions how people in our scene aren't very susceptible to change. Even Tagg further emphasized this

Thats because its not change

This is arguably the hardest part about getting this thing to potentially work. If we can get the basically lifelong dedicated pugchamp people to switch over to what could be a great thing for our scene, then we are going to be able to go places.so using what tagg had mentioned, if we started a massive drive for people to queue up and play faceit pugs, then over the long run, better things would come from it.

That only addresses at best 1/3 problems listed.

This is just my personal thoughts, but maybe one random tournament (maybe making this playable for non-premiums and not the top % of the ladder) could encourage a lot of people to play, given that the tournament is done through a client for obvious anti-cheat purposes

Which is why thats worked so well before...

This is actually one thing everyone has been asking for, but no one is playing the pugs or tournies....5 hours into the afternoon daily ladder, a grand total of 63 players had played one pug in the entirety of tf2...come on
