The dragon quest and final fantasy series past the first few games are really good story wise.

Would recommend DQ 4,5,6,7,8,9 and 11, especially 8 and 11.
Would recommend FF 3,7,8,9 and 10, especially ff10
Would recommend chronotrigger too.
I've played half of those games, and know enough about the rest to recommend them.

Pretty easy to emulate (nintendo DS or 3DS) or buy them for cheap on pc.

Nier Replicant v1.22 and Nier Automata are both very good. Convoluted as all fuck, but good. Also Spec Ops: The Line. That game is an absolute experience.

Games with stories i thought were good.

What Remains of Edith Finch (walking sim, fantastic story about embracing death and the marks that we leave on the world.)

EVERHOOD (Music/RPG a trippy existential experience, very challenging gameplay, wears its undertale inspiration on its sleeve, but is its own game for sure.)

Florence (interactive story book, very short, probably better on a phone, a story about a young romance and moving out)

Mass Effect Trilogy very popular space opera, amazing character interactions and dialogue, ignore anything but the trilogy.

Nier Automata The best game and best story i've ever enjoyed. A wonderful examination of what consciousness is. Long, but very worth it.

Omori A story about a child overcoming a horrible trauma by escaping into a dream like world. Control your emotions to become stronger. Reccomended if you like long JRPGS, but skip if not.

carnaticumjust read a book? if yoiu want good stories videogames are not the place

i read books too :)
ive spent the past few years of my life thinking that stories in books are way better than the ones in video games and that most of the praise for stories in games came from people who have "never actually read a book"
but playing through final fantasy xiv (specifically shadowbringers) has made me start to rethink this
im trying to stop being ignorant and step out of what i normally play and maybe experience some cool shit i havent before

thanks everyone for all the recommendations, its already a very long list of games i want to give a shot!

Assassin's Creed 2 and Black Flag are still two of my fav games.

Star Wars: KTOR 2 is also top tier, tho you might wanna get a quality of life mod for it cus there was some pretty broken shit in the original.

how has no one said undertale? If you can ignore the edgy community the game is amazing.

I also like gunpoint, mass effect, firewatch and portal

A lot of my favorites have been posted here already and I'd recommend anyone who is longing for good stories to try them out. Here are a few other games that I haven't seen mentionned but deserve some attention imo

Catherine.is a really intriguing puzzle/platformer game where every night in your dreams some fucked up shit happens. The crux of the game happens there, but you also have a social phase at the bar with your friends, where you can see some echoes of what happened last night. As far as stories go, this was definitively one of the most unpredictable ones I've had the pleasure to witness.

Transistor is a cool little turn by turn tactics sorta game (its been a little while so I don't remember everything) with a lot of options for building your character in a way you like as the game progresses. The game isn't something I'd call "story-rich", but the story is as much told to you as it is gathered from taking in the environnements and enemies designs (who are all pretty cool). It's a fun little game, lasted for like 4 hours for me, and replaying at least once now that you know some stuff is also pretty nice.

I've seen some people online dislike Life is Strange but I personally enjoyed it more than a fair amount. It is at its core little more than a walking sim where you talk to people, but the MC has save-scumming powers and that's actually really fun since the temptation of save scumming dialogue-heavy games is always present for me. It's a teen drama with some supernatural twists so enter at your own risks, but if you don't mind stuff like going back to high school or dealing with angry parents, the game has a lot to offer and, for me, really sold this little bit of Oregon has a place that felt real. If you liked it, there's also like 3 sequels that I have not played but they're probably okay.

A lot of people have discussed Spec Ops: The Line on the internet already, and for good reasons I think as even 9 years after its release, I don't think there has been any other good deconstructions of military shooters. I will say however that if you watched like a video essay on it, you can avoid playing the games as a lot of twists and punches the game throw at you will feel quite weak, and I will add that the gameplay itself is simply that of an average third person cover shooter from 2012, nothing bad but nothing amazing either. Either play the game on easy to not lose like 10 hours of your time, or crank the difficulty to the max and try to find some challenge.

If you're looking for games with RPG style explicit stories, I'd recommend Chrono Trigger as the classic RPG choice with a good story. It holds up today and has good mechanics for an RPG of its age.

A couple of people recommended Earthbound and Mother 3. While I think the former's dialogue and overall aesthetic is a lot cooler, the second definitely has a more coherent story that's worth checking out. You don't need to play Earthbound first but you should because its probably my favourite game of all time.

In the same vein and clearly inspired by Earthbound, Lisa The Painful is worth playing. Lots more wacky dialogue and a really nice story. Off by Mortis Ghost is another "Weird RPGmaker" game which is a lot more surreal but could be fun too. Also I'm just going to throw the Hylics games in here. The story of those basically doesn't matter but they fucking own.

The Psychonauts games use an interesting narrative device of learning more about characters by having levels inside their minds. This also leads to really cool level design.

Coyo mentioned Outer Wilds but it's worth reiterating. This is a game about Xenoarcheology where a lot of the game is reading logs left behind by other people to try and piece together a story.

If you're into the environmental storytelling/worldbuilding stuff where you have to go out of your way to look for bits of lore there's a whole genre of souls style games and metroidvanias like Hollow Knight that you can go for.

If you want something extremely esoteric then I am going to draw attention again to Rain World. The game doesn't really have an explicit story but has a narrative that's told through the player's personal experience with the game and its mechanics which mirrors the games themes. This is the sort of thing that makes a lot of people not enjoy the game at all because it's very unfair (which is kind of the point, you aren't playing the main character of the world and so it's not really designed for you) and leads other people to write shit like this. I don't know of any other game that does narrative like this so its worth checking out (also for its extremely deep but alien mechanics and very "real" feeling AI).
