flatlineIt's not enough that we have to ask people to look past the cartoony style in a world of modern fps games but they also have to dig past a mile of awfulness in the form of painful pub bullshit, awful mods, and millions of hats to get to something slightly palatable as an esport.
can i just correct you here on how tf2 would be a remarkable esport given that players (of any game, really) could do the above at the efficiency that people did to start this game up

enigmaKanecoThere will be a time esea will stop supporting tf2, (whether it is due to ipkane being a massive cunt or otherwise), but tf2 will stay alive regardless.
nope...
and why does everyone call him ipkane?
You called?
Alright then, I just don't understand why you americans are so focused on esea being the last bastion of tf2, if it dies assuming every one of you instantly quits the game and never comes back there are thousands of european, south american, asian, australasian and even african teams that will keep playing the game. And it's blatantly obvious even from 9000 miles away that lpkane is a massive retard, even the csgo players themselves would agree.

i'm not quite sure an alive and kicking african/australian tf2 scene is of much interest to us here
it's a north american issue and it's always boggling to me that people outside this continent keep commenting: oh, MY league will be fine so who cares?

pretty sure there is less than 50 teams for tf2 in aus. i think this seasons ozfortress winter league is struggling.

Irish TF2 was never supported by ESEA and we have no league.
Don't make the same mistakes we made ;_________;

Why do you stick with esea anyway, just run your own league, i'm sure you're plenty capable of it enigma. You're just setting yourself up to be jerked around, the american tf2 scene reminds me of a beaten wife who just keeps coming back for more because 'it's your only option'. Are airfares to lans for 24 players 3 times a year or whatever worth letting lpkane shit all over your game and your friends?

ESEA works entirely because everything concerning the tf2 division is subsidized by the infrastructure and staff in place for CSGO. without a network like esea-cs to piggyback off of, a comparable community-driven league would be nigh impossible.
this is of course also totally ignoring the fact that no sane person would put in the amount of time and money to get this all going in the first place.

anyone with suggestions and criticism for UGC 6s that aren't related to making a paid league should feel free to add me to discuss, btw. That's how we decided to match our whitelist and map schedule to that of ESEA (and therefore NA 6s as a whole).

nopeSo why don't you consider etf2l comparable?
ETF2L is surprisingly similar in some ways (i.e. not genuinely self sufficient), but there's a lot that isn't provided and even the most experienced players are effectively doing a lot of DIY organisation even with the efforts of community figures like Arie and Zoob. In Oz this is the same, but that's what ESEA buys you - total infrastructure with a lan and prize pool. It's a big cultural difference and taking it away would be a big disruption for questionable gain.
I mean you could start your own commercial league, but you'd have to start with CS and Dota to make it financially viable and add TF2 later as a labour of love.

Sorry if its rude but I honestly think anyone that says, "Just run your own league" is as dumb as a box of rocks.
You obviously haven't the slightest clue exactly how much work that takes to set up and maintain

I can confirm that league operations are difficult. Especially free ones.

There are plenty of examples and history of leagues being difficult to create and run. Anyone remember eSource, or TF2Games, or IGL? Hell, even UGC has been having problems recently, and it's been around since the beginning.
Stability seems to be quite an undervalued trait right now, especially with all of the uncertainty swirling around competitive TF2 in general. We've already come off a year where we've explored other options in NA and only now are we starting to recover from the divisions it caused within the community. ESEA may not be perfect, but it's the best option we have right now, and I don't see an even remotely comparable option popping up without a few years of investment and development.

Up until the last few seasons, we've not had a dominate team. Teams were comparable (mostly Mix^ and B4nny's teams followed by everybody else in invite being near the same level) at the highest level and competition was pretty good. Austrailia had Immunity for what . . . 14 seasons, be completely uncontested. Epsilon ran a train almost every season they played. While I'm definitely not saying EU and AUS are less competitive scenes, the disparity between the best in every region vs the highest level of competition in every region is clearly evident. Tf2's best players will leave if there isn't a paid league that adds stakes to competition.
While lpkane is, in fact, a nearly insufferable asshole in most of his interactions, he's running a business. This specific post made it look like he doesn't give a fuck about a branch of his business (which like, real talk, i wouldn't either) and that hurts his business. While he should DEFINITELY hire somebody to speak for him (like goddamn, does he know he's a fucking asshole?) it is understandable for him to get defensive. It was a slight oversight that impacted 1 player. One Player.

Leagues take a lot of work to run and honestly give you little in return. In the case of ESEA, they have a system set up where their return is money, so the effort is worth it.
Mind you, if you love the community and enjoy contributing to it, it's good fun. But just don't expect anything in return for what is really a hobby. In reality, you will end up investing far more into the community (in both time and money) than you will ever hope to get back.
The trick is going in with that mindset. Then you can have fun doing what you love.
(if you didn't know I'm the league director at ozfortress.)

zigzterJimiJamstopitdadWhat bothered me the most from reading through that whole post was how the cs go players just tossed tf2 aside like some childish game with silly hats and cartoon graphics. They've probably hardly played the game, let alone played it competitively. Everyone sees TF2 as a joke, and it really sucks to see it get trashed like that. It is such a fun, rewarding game and it does not deserve to be shit talked by a bunch of ignorant nerds on a forum.
flatlinepart of their ignorance is valves current billing of tf2 as "the cartoon hat game" but the way they react in their ignorance is so toxic
I see shit like this on reddit every god damn time TF2 is mentioned

people just make the hat simulator joke over and over and over
So non-TF2 players aren't allowed to beat a joke to death, but it's cool for "us" to make the same asinine Bitcoin jokes every time ESEA is brought up.

I think talking about ESEA = bitcoins is very very relevant when we're discussing lpkane and him being rich etc.. I think it's a lot less relevant when we talk about ESEA in general. That whole shtick got old a month after it happened.

who can honestly blame them for thinking we're an inferior game? When valve essentially takes the money we made them and dumps it into cs and dota, then ignores the tf2 community in regards to almost anything. How can we as a community gain respect from other communities when valve doesn't seem to show any

TF2 players think they take their hat money and put it in CSGO. CSGO players think they take their skin money and put it in Dota. Dota players think they take their fancy courier money and put it in Steam machines or whatever.
The fact is that Valve invests little of any of its games' revenues back into them, using them for newer projects instead. Most things wrong with TF2 aren't really about money. Things like bad default settings, pointless weapons with weird stats, a bad quickplay system, bugs, unintuitive mechanics, bad weapon tooltip descriptions etc. aren't things that need money to be fixed, they just need a bit of care and attention, which is what has been missing lately.

When TF2 brings in $139 million ($40 mil more then D2+CSGO combined), but only have a small dev team and dedicated servers where do you think the money goes?
