I'd be surprised if TF2 made more money than CS+DOTA but it's probably way easier money. The community basically makes the updates now, probably paying very few people to work on TF2. all valve has to do is run their servers for the game.
edit: saw the article enigma posted, damn. doesn't say how much cs and dota are bringing in though, or how the community market is counted.
Yeah that's the article I was going to link. After ti I doubt were higher then DoTA for 2014, but with that type of capital gain we definitely shouldn't be treated like the red headed step child of the trio.

They invest actual time and money into those games of course they're going to have a lot more players. Considering cost effective ratios, TI alone must've cost valve at least a few million dollars but they know it's growing potential. If we average 800k players less but manage to bring in extreme amounts of capital+profit gains above dota, with 1/5 of the effort they put into either game they could probably double or triple our player base and their profit from this game

That's when Dota2 was just coming out of beta and CSGO hadn't exploded like it has. The revenues aren't really that relevant, at Valve people work on what they feel like and evidently none of the A-team are interested in TF2 anymore.

Doubt it. They sold $40 million dollars of those compendium things, paid a quarter of it out in prize money and kept the rest.

That's still money they have to invest for TI, regardless of it paying for itself. I'm simply saying we have little to no expenditures besides dedicated servers and a slack dev team.
As much as I love tf2 and want the community to grow, why should Valve invest time and money where output is relatively low? There's really no moral obligation for them to put support into an 8 year old game besides to make money. If Valve saw tf2 as a franchise where they could profit through the competitive scene then they already would have invested in it. That's what they have economists for.

there's a lot more to it than just adding support or whatever to the game tbh as far as supporting the comp viability of tf2
retooling the game to be 6s or even HL viable is a big ordeal that is going to piss off a shitload of people, compared to making a new CS or Dota game, where from the ground up the casual community is told to kill itself. as it is now, remaking tf2 to actually be a good esport would require changing almost everything about the game as it is, even in 6s or HL because the game is dreadful to watch right now. maybe tf3 or whatev could have a shot, but there's too many issues to bother fixing with tf2, when that effort could be put into a different project that would not make pubbies mad, and not make comp players mad, and would actually be interesting to watch

I guess i interpreted ur argument as: tf2 isn't popular because valve chooses not to support it
I'd disagree and say tf2 isn't popular because the game kind of sucks to watch
6es offers a shitload as a competitive gamemode but the only way I'd ever see anyone taking it seriously would be if valve or someone else made a standalone game based around the mode. Mechanically it has a ton of potential and 5cp isn't something that's really there in anything else which is what makes it cool but as long as it's tied to tf2 valve won't want to support it, and people will look down on it.
