I think it will bring more viewers than players. I don't like how alot of people think mm will bring in alot of players, because I think it won't. After a newbie plays mm to a high rank, he'll have to play lobbies/pugs which will be much higher skill level than mm, then he'll have to actually join a league. It's the same as csgo. A person plays MM, then he plays faceit or ESEA mm, THEN joins a team in a league. What i think MM will do, is it will make players who play MM interested in the high levels of play, so they will watch the streams, therefore supporting the comp scene's growth. Like in CSGO, most the "competitive" players are actually players who play matchmaking and watch streams, only a small portion are people who play in actual leagues. It's the viewers that drives the scene after all, not the players. Correct me if i'm wrong though.
MM won't bring more players, but more viewers.

what makes an esport succesful is the number of viewers not the amount of players.

And more viewers= more people interested -> more players
And more viewers= more people interested -> more players
mm brought tons of people into csgo and while its not a great comparison, there will definitely be at least a spike if not a lasting increase in tf2's base
