#12 TF2 Daily? What do you think? in TF2 General Discussion
brownymasterAs much as I like the idea, I feel you are severely underestimating the work you need to do to get this done. I would consider knocking down the number of days and making it a longer continuous section of time (2x20 minutes with a break instead of 20-30). I support the idea, but I don't know many TF2 players who could actually do this for over 2 weeks.

This was something I was going to bring up as well. Another issue I wanted to bring up would be content. I don't want to be a downer but I want to think realistically. Personally, I like the idea because the dailies are great and Day9's personality is infectious despite several properties I don't particularly like about him. I see two other major problems with the idea as it is now:

1. Sure there will be an endless stream of demos asking to be reviewed, but how far can we go with "Newbie Daily" and "Pub tips/tricks" without repeating the same factoids like a broken record?

2. Do we actually have anyone interesting to interview? TF.tv is pretty much the center of NA TF2, and even by just lurking here you'll get to know enough about the inner machinations of the community, including upcoming events and how things like #tf2.pug.na work.

I guess you could rework problem 2 so it could be an "Around The World" segment where lower-level NA players/NA players who simply just don't know about the EU/AUS side of TF2 could get some exposure to it and vice versa. A good idea, but can it be realistically executed? Consider condensing the times it airs and rethinking the content.

#3 New build in Hardware

Not big on overclocking, but I like Gigabyte boards and having that option just in case is a good idea. I was looking at the Corsair PSU as well. Did you link that 7770 for OCing purposes as well? I'd rather use the 100358L since I generally play a lot of older games and source games, and I'm not particularly afraid of anything being released in 2013+ in terms of performance since games are still stuck on console limitations.

Subtotal is $787.92

Now I need to actually cut some corners.

#53 Origins of Your Name/Alias in Off Topic

When I was younger, I would always be "that guy" and use my real name as my game moniker. Problem is, Jon is probably the most common name on the face of the planet. Then Star Wars Battlefront came out and I adopted a clone trooper designation as my name, went through several of those before I finally found a community, and that followed me to SWBF2. Then Republic Commmando came around and I became GI_Rabbi because holy shit look at me I'm a comedy prodigy old religious man running and gunning in a battlefield. There was an old vet who named himself Sgt. Rock who was a big player in the RC clan I joined, and we'd always fuck around with the other kids in the server who weren't in the clan. One kid believed I was a girl after Sgt. Rock told him that I was his "favorite jewish girl". We lost our shit every time it was brought up after that. Dunno where he is now, hope he's doing well.

Then I played BF2/2142 and I got real edgy and decided to name myself "Russian_Reaper" from a line I heard in Bad Boys. Changed it back to GI_Rabbi when that died down, and I went to play World in Conflict. There's where I soon got my current moniker. Me and my clan would like to stack teams, but when we were looking to just fool around we would just random. By an incredible ratio, I'd be put on the Russian side more than the US/NATO side. Anchorman had been out for a while, and everyone knew about Will Ferrel's scene in the credits where he goes through all those exclamations. Great Stalin's Mustache! was born.

After WiC, I started putting some big time into pubbing in CS:S, but I kept getting kicked and banned by "anti-racial" server plugins and server admins because "GI_Rabbi" was offensive. So I switched. Played some other games, and finally came to TF2. 2 TF2 communities, one imageboard, and a whole new slew of friends later, Great Stalin's Mustache! became gr8stalin because I can't fit the former into some name boxes.

#1 New build in Hardware

I got accepted to SUNY Stony Brook with a bunch of my friends and classmates from my campus's CompSci/IT/Math department. Their dorms aren't exactly great on desk or floor space from the videos and panoramas. In comparison, my tower would take up a crazy amount of space based on their desk size no matter where I put it. My idea was to make an itx case for size and portability.

Problem is, I only get so much money from my Pell and TAP grant autismbux and I need to also get room stuff. Everything can be upgraded at a later point in time so cutting corners is an option.

#48 Rap Music in Off Topic

Jedi Mind Tricks and the solo albums that their members do - good shit. Specifically go for:
7L & Esoteric
Reef the Lost Cauze
Outerspace
Vinnie Paz

Talib Kweli did some good stuff under Reflection Eternal and had some good appearances on other songs.
The Last Emperor is good music, not sure if he was put up already.
Gnarls Barkley before he became Cee-lo Green. Wasn't a fan of The Lady Killer.
Childish Gambino is damn good. You'll love his tracks even more if you liked Community.

Nujabes and RJD2 aren't rappers by the way. Well, RJD2 did sing on Third Hand but a majority of his production lies in instrumentals, not actual singing. If you like Nujabes, though, go search for "Soon It Will Be Cold Enough" by Emancipator. Not by him but it's very similar.

yuki*snip*

I can't believe I still have this silly image. Not really relevant.

But as people have said previously, unfortunately we need ESEA more than they "need" us (probably).

CEVO and UGC exist. Sure there are features of both of those leagues that are either shit or not up to par with ESEA, but it ain't like there's no backup plan. I'm also pretty sure people here would start salivating all over their Shlomo Goldstein Razer Gaming Products and Peripherals (c)(r)(tm) at the prospect of being able to run their own league if they get enough people to rally to their idea/cause.

"Where there's a will, there's a way" and all that.

swiperWouldn't it be better if things like this were in a wiki?

Real talk this is a good point. Just compile everything into a Wiki for ease of access for everyone, not just new guys. Allows for easy reference, too.

ArtemRadman Dota 2 is much more interesting to watch than TF2kill creeps for 15 minutes

Gonna play devil's advocate - Dota 2 might not be interesting to watch, but competitive TF2 is completely boring to those who just sit in pubs and play pyro/spy/engineer/heavy. Highlander is more attractive to those people, but even then they'll see one match play through and go "guess that's it let's pack the bags and saddle up back to the ol' 24/7 instarespawn 2fort server". On the other extreme, matches could drag on for really long periods of time. Not sure if you were around for the days of Yukon (god I hope that pizzashit is out of rotation) but those games could go on for unbearably long times in stalemates. Those are boring even for people who love 6s play.

In defense of TF2, I may like playing have friends who make playing Dota 2 fun, but god damn watching streams of it that aren't SingSing's or a game TobiWan is casting is like pulling teeth.

Come to think of it, we could actually use someone like TobiWan for TF2. Do we have someone like that? Hope it's not extine.

Do you want the entire .odt I made back in 2011 when Gotfrag and places like CommunityFortress and MyGamingEdge were still things? As long as you credit War for at least half of the information, it's yours. It'll save you a lot of hassle and you can edit what you need to in order to bring it up to speed.

#32 The Future Of Competitive Team Fortress 2 in TF2 General Discussion

If it all boils down to getting in good with big-name pub servers to promote events and streams, why not play ball with them instead of just saying "we need to get advertised on a pub server"? Sitting here and collecting +frags ain't gonna do any of us any good. See what it will take. Ask them, "if you can help us, how can we help you?". If it comes down to paying for ad space over that stupid "Pinion Pot of Gold" bullshit, do it. I'd personally rather be blocked for 5 or 8 seconds to read a quick non-HTML MOTD promoting TF.tv or some upcoming event than sit for upwards of 40 seconds staring at the words "YOU CAN JOIN IN X SECONDS OR STAY TUNED FOR PINION POT OF GOLD".

My point is that ideas are all well & good - ACTING on them is where the real money comes in. On an incredibly small and personal scale, if I hadn't acted on enlisting Harbl for the Shazbowl I don't think we could have won if it was just me in command. Also after the Shazbowl, I made a lot of talk about opening up competitive play for T:A to the crowd of friends and followers we garnered after it. My crew and I had to play ball with some of the most resistant developers I've ever seen in my life, but we managed to open up the whitelist for as many people as I could (which ended up only totaling about 35 or 40 people, but we got some matches down). Gotta take these ideas about going out into pubs and promoting the environment and boosting streams and act on them. I don't know what I can do myself but I'm willing to help out anyone who has an idea and wants to do something with it.

Can't wait for Bradford Ross's FLANK_DOMINATOR Flakes. They'll go great with Johnathan Wendel's Cashews of Chaos.
