Hello, I was hoping to spark some interest in a HUD I was attempting to make. I am not very good at making HUDs, they never tun out like i would like, however, I was wondering if someone can make a HUD using these ideas or give me pointers to help make this HUD look how I want it to. The images are made using illustrator and from the perspective of a medic main while not being based only around medic, thanks for viewing :]
http://imgur.com/iwQUuFn.png
My issue with most HUDs is that I cant see the health or ammo in certain lighting and backgrounds, and the HUDs that don't have this problem end up blocking too much of the screen.
http://imgur.com/x929Sl4.png
My first idea, to have the health and ammo close to the cross hair and to have the little boxes behind the numbers to make them stand out, using an easy to read font. The boxes aren't too dark so you can see whats behind and the charge meters and kill streaks are moved out of the way focusing on seeing as much of the world as possible while still being able to easily see important things on the HUD

What low health and ammo and buffed health would look like.

What the med HUD would look like along with ammo with no reserve. The target and heal indicators are smallish just to help with visibility.

Other target indicators and full uber

Scoreboard that leaves most of the screen open but also shows everything needed. Number values are set high for spacing. I know there are some huds that look rather like this but I am not trying to steal ideas, just looking for a minimal that is easy to see (kinda contradictory). Let me know what you think and if anyone can help me with this project :]

the HUDs that don't have this problem end up blocking too much of the screen
Background boxes usually take a lot of space for a reason, which is to accommodate all possible in-game values. In your mockup, the health and uber boxes barely fit three digits starting with a 1; they certainly won't fit anything with three standard-width digits.
This is an even bigger issue with ammo, as syringe guns have 40 clip ammo and 150 reserve ammo; two large characters and two-and-a-half small characters, and even more if you consider MvM (I personally don't).
You have a handful of options here:
- forgo compatibility and stick to smaller boxes
- use a narrow-enough typeface to suit your needs
- use outlines or shadows to enhance readability instead of backgrounds
- integrate an aesthetic that allows your values to exceed the boxes' boundaries (see: default HUD)
Your typeface here is, ultimately, personal preference, but I would raise a concern about legibility; the 3, 6, and 9 glyphs are all very similar to the 8 glyph in terms of x-height and apertures, and could easily be misidentified at small sizes/resolutions and/or in your peripheral vision.
While we're at it, your scoreboard is also problematic. The player names, scores, streaks, and pings, along with their associated labels, have a fixed color which cannot be changed; same with any non-zero stats (although this may be a bug). In addition, your stats panel is incredibly difficult to read, although it should be better with realistic values.
If you'd like, I can make this HUD for you.

I would be intereste in this hud becoming a reality as well. I'm currently in the market after my old one broke with gun mettle.

Could also create a font for the background panels where instead of legible numbers it's just blocks, allowing them to dynamically resize if more digits/wider characters get introduced. Though I'm pretty sure you'd need to stop using alpha values for this, since overlapping characters (the only way you'd get curved edges) that're transparent don't 'combine' and overlap the way you'd expect.

yeah i can make those boxes bigger, i think 0's are my largest character in this font and i can make those boxes bigger to accommodate. Also i maybe the values in the score board are all 1000, which you will never reach unless your farming in a idle server, are just there to show spacing and that you can fit numbers well into the hundreds.

that hud is looking sick so far. i'm not a huge fan of the scoreboard though (seems absolutely huge and could be made much smaller and easier to glance at)

the idea of the score board was to leave the top half of the screen clear. as medic i sometimes hold tab open to see when an enemy medic spawns

Also, the difference between adding a stroke and the boxes, also some new font ideas.

personally, i like the boxes especially for the timers up top. maybe add an option to keep/remove boxes for health/ammo? neou and code are my favorite too. using code might make remind people too much of yahud tho so idk.

I would actually switch to this after playing with the same broesel hud + m0re font edit I made myself for 3 years

I know that it's to early to ask, but I'll try - is there a way I could have dl link for this?

MubbyI don't know why I'm putting it here but it seems like the type of place;
http://imgur.com/U2dbsOM - I don't know why but back when I began for the huds.tf contest I had the idea of making a Super Mario Wii recreation like HUD. I don't see any potential in doing it today but if anyone wants to bother they can try.
Something relevant;
I'd sure love to actually see some kind of finished product like this HUD and I'd be happy to help out with making it.

EricThis is an even bigger issue with ammo, as syringe guns have 40 clip ammo and 150 reserve ammo; two large characters and two-and-a-half small characters, and even more if you consider MvM
engie pistol has 200 reserve ammo, minigun and flamethrowers have 200 ammo, natascha has 300
as for input on the HUD, the standard HUD looks promising but the leaderboard stats on the bottom are a clusterfuck. I'd recommend making the labels a gray rather than white, and making them a small caps font.

Would be kind of hard to get the outline right. Shadows are currently just darker versions of the exact same label, duplicated with a z-index lower than the normal label, offset a couple of pixels to the bottom right.
In order to achieve this effect you'd need a second font with slightly thicker characters at the same font size - think Photoshop's faux bold, but pre-baked into a duplicate font.
