Do they want to remain anonymous or something? Is it the cool thing? Just curious, that's all

Doesn't it hide your backpack so that you avoid having scammers contact you constantly?

I think some players also do it to combat ddosing

i love privating my steam profile like...you're not looking at my tf2 hours lmfao

more practically speaking, it keeps away scammers and makes sure people irl can't happen upon your hours/2 weeks without u knowing.
also keep in mind a that a lot of private profiles are just on "friends only", also that i'm pretty sure valve made private default in the past couple years, so normie or old accounts are private much more commonly

Essentially, I think of my Steam profile as my home. If you're commenting on it, it's like you breaking into my home and stealing my stuff.

for me the main reason was that bad players would instantly look at my hours and try to justify how shit they were in comparison even though the majority of the time they had the exact same amount/more, and having a private profile just eliminates that conversation

its to avoid the same kind of player whos been stuck in open for 5 years who non stop makes fun of people in open

BeaterDoesn't it hide your backpack so that you avoid having scammers contact you constantly?

I keep mine friends only so I don't get dumb spam comments, before I'd get both bots and real people trying to phish/shark me at least once a week. I used to report them all to valve as hijacked accounts engaging in scam behaviour but I stopped bothering. Valve emails you when they take action on a report you submitted, and despite sending sometimes multiple reports a week, I'd be lucky to see one email a year from Valve about anything happening based off my reports.

I have since had pubbers vehemently insist that I'm hacking and try to kick me specifically because I have a private profile, swings and roundabouts I guess.

I private my profile because I dont want angry nerds to literally stalk my friends just to get to me cuz they're mad. People do stupid shit when theyre upset
