Need help with tf2 fps drops

Ok so starting from a couple of months ago my TF2 started getting really bad frame drops from like 120 to 5-10 in middle of fights. I have a fairly new computer. I don't really know much about computers so i really need some help fixing this.

my computer specs are

cpu: i7 - 3770
gpu: amd readeon hd 7470 2 gb
ram: 8 gb

I belive that's all you need

Also i tried Chris's highframes, maxframes and dx9 configs but they didn't help much

I've never even heard of a 7470. I assume that's really low end, and that's what is causing the fps drops

but i am able to run battlefield 3 at around 30-40 fps in medium-low settings. But why not tf2

I pretty much had the same problem with tf2, I found out that on the slowdowns my GPU wasn't used (lowish 10%) and that made my tf2 unplayable ( no it didn't overheat).
It eventually fixed itself after I tried verifying and the usual stuff.
Try re-installing tf2 or wait for an update to eventually fix it.

if you're relying on your CPU to do a lot of work, install a program called process lasso. Unfortunately TF2 is really crumbo when it comes to utilizing all 4 cores: instead it puts the most emphasis on the first core and less on the rest.

You can download process lasso, go to options, and set it to set hl2.exe to a higher priority in options>>configure default cpu priorities.

then go to options>>configure default cpu affinities and enter hl2.exe for using all 4 cores and then enter another value, *.exe, and instead choose to let that use only cores 1 2 3 and not 0.

What this will do is set every program that isn't tf2 to use the other 3 cores while tf2 gets sole usage out of the first core, core 0. fights in particular will always cut your fps down but hopefully this will give you a really good boost.

make sure you use povohat's surfaceproperties.txt file to reduce the dust and stuff that comes from hitscan so fights wont be so laggy.

i have no idea about the 7470 in particular but you could also try changing the option "r_fastzreject" in your config to see if maybe using more of your gpu could fix things.

edit: got asked, and yea *.exe is what you enter for the affinities screen as said above. It's a wildcard character (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildcard_character) which basically means it can be any ___.exe that isn't hl2.exe. If you have any other programs that would ever need to use all four you can select that, and you can disable the feature when you don't play tf2 so it doesn't cause any problems either. It's a good fix for any computer, just not crummy ones.
