y0, so I just bought a sexy new 144hz asus monitor, only to find that it's not 100% compatible with my laptop (asus republic of gamers, dont remember the exact model).
the monitor has 3 inputs: hdmi, displayport, and dvi-d dual link.
the laptop has 2: hdmi and vga.
hdmi is the only option that would work, but I'm told most hdmi cables dont have the bandwidth to support 120hz at 1080p. apparently, the hdmi 1.4b does, though. however, I am not sure how compatibility works with these cables, since the 1.4b came out after my laptop did. does the 1.4b have backwards compatibility with my laptop, or do I need to go a different direction?

Why don't you just grab a cable from a local store with a decent return policy and return it if it doesn't work?

I'm aware that no hdmi will support the 144hz, I'm just asking about 120hz (which is still a massive upgrade from the 60z ive always had)

no, it will not
vg248qe (and all others I assume) only support higher refresh rates over DP and DVI. You can get 75Hz at resolutions below 1080P over hdmi, but that's all you can hope for.
*VG248QE + laptop user* I'm using mine connected to my laptops mini display port, which runs through the intel gpu instead of the nvidia. I only get ~100-110 fps but it is still much better than 200 fps @ 60 Hz
The only thing that might work for you, which I haven't tried, is an active (powered) hdmi -> dual link DVI adapter. But these cost like $100 and aren't guaranteed to work, especially since your laptop does not have HDMI 1.4b
