Dota 2 Question: Control groups.

Hi,

I have a question regarding control groups and microing in Dota 2. I like to keep "automatically select summoned units" off because it gives me more control over tree ents, and things like that. However, When it comes to a different heroes like visage for example, for some reason it needs to cycle through each unit, instead of having both selected as one group. Ok, I realize this may not being very clear, so let me try and elaborate what I'm trying to do.

My goal is to be able to have a key which selects all units, and if pressed again will separate units into 2 groups (hero and summoned units, I.e Furion and then ents). This would make it easier to cycle through each group with tab, that's the default I believe.

If this is vague or messy, let me know. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

set your familiars, spirit bear, eidolons, treants, forge spirits, etc to a control group

by using your select and (default) ctrl 1,2,3..0

there is an option to issue commands to all your units (hero + summoned units) by holding ctrl and issuing the command.

there is another option to select your hero by default f1.

so you should be able to issue commands to all your units by using 3 buttons, f1-hero, ctrl-"1"-summoned units, and ctrl-command-all.

I believe f2 is also default for courier.

So are you saying that by doing this it will select both familiars instead of just one when summoned? And will it stay selected as a group when I tab between hero and other units?

Any clarification, its not really working, and I'm unsure of what I'm doing wrong. Maybe I'm not being clear? sorry if that's the case.

Never mind, I figured it out. For some reason I have to double tap 4 in order to select both familiars instead of 1 at a time. I have no idea why, but it works. Thanks.

If you're familiar with WC3 or SC control grouping it's the exact same. If not, you basically control click a unit type to select all units of that type. If you press ctrl+(#key) it binds all units of that type to the number you selected. If for whatever reason you want to add more units to that control group you can highlight the units and shift+(same #key) to add them in.

I'm still iffy on how Chen and Enchantress work, though. For example, if you make a control group for a centaur that you're controlling and it dies, then you control a troll it won't be set to the same key. So you basically have to re-make a control group whenever you control a different unit, which isn't a big deal if you're used to RTS games.

for simplicity's sake, I use 1 for my hero and I bind to 2 to 'select all other units' so I can automatically control new units but when I want to without having to bind them or turn on the option you dislike as well. If you hold ctrl and click on any one unit it will select all of the same unit. but really i like my solution the best (for me anyways) because for nature's prophet, visage, necronomicon carrying, etc, etc it's always very simply just 2. if you want to use it exactly as you described, you could bind select all other units to ctrl+1 but that can cause a fumble. and to cycle between them, you press tab while selecting whatever group.

this is because familiar's stuns are really important and you don't want to use them both at the same time, it's setup that way so you can press Q to stun, then press tab to select the new one and restun to keep the guy stunned for an extended duration.
