SBARROHOTTOPICwasn't it supposed to be John Hurt?
No
wThe mystery of John Hurt’s Doctor may have finally been revealed.
Ever since the great John Hurt (Alien, Merlin) appeared in the final moments of the Doctor Who season-seven finale, “The Name of the Doctor,” fans have been speculating away as to which version of the Time Lord the actor was playing.
During a visit by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall at the Doctor Who studio while on their annual summer tour of Wales, the show’s costume designer Howard Burden described Hurt as a “dark Doctor,” saying:
“There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”
Good to get that bit straight. So does that make Hurt’s Time Lord Doctor 8.5? Or is he actually Nine and Eccleston Ten, with David Tennant now the Eleventh Doctor and Matt Smith Twelve? We don't know the answer to that question yet, but knowing Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, we're sure it's gonna be a doozie.
In the meanwhile, it definitely explains away why Hurt’s wearing McGann’s Doctor’s waistcoat and Eccleston’s leather jacket, clearing up a few speculations, but also raising more intriguing questions as well.
We don’t know about you, but we’re really looking forward to that Doctor Who 50th-anniversary special, and Nov. 23 cannot come soon enough!
