Doesn't matter if I start Steam and launch TF2 immediately, or later on in the day. If I try to join a server, it says I'm in insecure mode when I'm not (-insecure or whatever the command is isn't in my launch options). When I look at the server browser, it says I must be in Steam Beta to find servers, even though I am.

By any chance do you play any pirated games that would normally be played through Steam
Just a guess but you could try a launch option for tf2 that turns it to secure. If that even exists. lol
a lot of steam games that are pirated turn off the connection to steam, at least from my experience w/ skidrow games. just need to restart steam

Yeah if you play games (such has Borderlands 2, recently) most of the time they emulate Steam or something via a DLL (as far as I know) and you'll have to restart your Steam before you can play online again. It's harmless but annoying. I've had this issue with a pirated copy of CS:S and a few other games.
yeah i've been playing bl2 and dishonored. i'm done with dishonored but i can't see myself stopping with bl2 anytime soon so i'm gonna have to deal with it.
