Hey guys.
So this is the result of about 8hrs work over 3 days. Just tried to pour every practical bit of info I know about streaming into a guide. I know it looks long, but trust me, if you want a great looking stream that doesn't rape your FPS, this is like the super-abridged tl;dr version.

Guide looks really good. Well done. In your experience, using dxtory+obs is better than using just obs?

Guide is really helpful, explaining each setting. For me OBS alone does better than dxtory+OBS however, but maybe that's because I play in windowed mode.

Bassically OBS is more efficient than xsplit and lets you stream at the same quality using less resources. However most people are just using that extra room to do 60fps.
In theory OBS + Dxtory should give you the best playability. You'll generally get a little less FPS than just OBS alone, but in return you'll get absolutely no input lag and a lot less micro stutter. However dxtory performance varies almost randomly from computer to computer so this might not be the case for you personally. Just give both of them a go and see what works better. 90% of the time it'll be dxtory.

If you get input lag from using OBS alone, lower your send buffer size to 4096.

FckingMadIf you get input lag from using OBS alone, lower your send buffer size to 4096.
What's the logic behind this? Is this something that worked for you?
I'm quite curious, could you go into a little more detail about the issues you were having the settings you were using?

Fantastic. I don't know what part of this guide got my OBS to actually stream, but it was something. I'd usually get disconnected straight away when trying to stream. Thanks!

I have absolutely no idea about the technical aspect, but I can confirm this. I was feeling some amount of input lag when streaming, so I lowered my send buffer size (Lange's advice) to the lowest setting (I think 8192 on mine - I think the new lowest setting is 4096 but I haven't updated) and it felt completely normal again.

At a guess, probably your stream key was wrong. Sounds like the most likely thing to cause that. :P

huh, that's interesting. I will have to investigate this. I'll update the guide and this thread with what I find.

It was a solution me and Jim found while testing.

No, it would connect until I started trying to play, and then it'd disconnect me. If anything, it was probably the vbvmaxrate thing that helped me out, as it was one of the only things I changed.

switched my headphones to using a usb connector and it fixed itself somehow, I switched the option in mumble. if you use usb try disabling positional audio

Great. I'll be following this when I get my new internet in the next week or two. Xsplit's UI and general feel was pissing me off >:|

Sorry to bump but I'm having some issues. When I join a server in any game my ping goes up by a hundred or so. My internet isn't terrible but it's tolerable for streaming, is there any way I can fix this?

That used to happen to me, I had to turn off my stream while joining servers/launching tf2, changing maps is fine though.

sorry to bump an old thread, but i too have a question. when streaming (any game) sometimes when there is a lot of motion on the screen the image gets choppy and the colors get distorted. any idea how to fix that?

When streaming FPS games, I feel like my game is a bit choppy no matter what. Tried capping fps, playing in fullscreen, etc, to no avail. I use Dxtory + OBS.
Mouse movements feel sluggish and I dont get the constant 120fps I normally do - even if I'm getting much more than 120fps in game. Is there anything I can do, or is it just not possible to play at 120hz and stream?

#22, I think a higher bitrate would help this, careful about going too high though or you might experience packet loss.

OBS now as (experimental) game capture included, so you should not need Dxtory any more. You will need to run the 32 bit version of OBS (both are installed at once).

Hey there Skyride. I have wondered is the a way I can use this with Fraps or is there no other way.

Hey, sorry for reviving an old topic but is there a way to get OBS to capture sounds from specific programs only?

Since this thread got bumped, I'm going to update this guy at some point in the near future. It's severely out of date. If you're looking to get set up, read the Dota 2 guide, and don't use anything other than "veryhigh" for x264 preset and don't do 1080p.

Do you have a link to the Dota 2 guide? Couldn't find it googling around.
