My motherboard is a Asus P8Z77-V which I also heard is pretty good for OC. Might have to look into it, definitely dont want to take much risk tho as this rig was an hell of an investment for me

And the drops are completly random and started appearing after the last few updates, I get 80 fps's for like 20 seconds, then all of a sudden I start getting 150-200 which is normal, and then after a while 70 again, then sometime it just flutuates between 130-70 in a few seconds. Its pretty crazy. Tbh today it only happened in the afternoon IDK why. At night didn't notice much drops.

i run i5 @ 4.5 (liquidcooled) with a gtx 670 lightboost 120hz.

i still have frame trouble every now and then. it'll differ per map as well...and when steam community goes down or magically comes back

This game is picky. I can stream csgo @720 no problem. 300+fps. tf2 i have to stream 960x540 to not get frame fucked. It's not even the frame loss sometimes with streaming, it's the fact it doesn't feel like 120hz anymore. but i digress... some little things that may mess with your game

steam community overlay
mumble overlay
running windowed vs full screen
if you have very low ram
if your hard drive is almost full
having message notifications pop up on your overlay
other processor/memory heavy applications you may have running in the background

trial and error. in any case, i highly recommend overclocking. the improvement is definitely noticeable

My new notebook (i7-4700MQ + GTX 765M) gets about 70 FPS average on a 28 player pub (tested on pl_upward) without any FPS configs yet. I turned on VSYNC and it holds 60 FPS pretty well but frequently dips to 45-50 FPS. The CPU is advertised as a 2.4GHz model but runs all its threads at 3.2GHz most of the time in high performance mode, and the GTX 765M (essentially a GeForce GTX 650 Ti) is barely stressed, so I'm guessing game engine overhead is to blame. My 4770K @ 4.2GHz and HD 7970 with an ASUS VG248QE 144Hz monitor faces the same issues, 144Hz VSYNC is obtainable but there are lots of little random dips along with some big drops to the 80-90 FPS range which is unacceptable IMO.

I have an i7-3770k at 4.5ghz and I have issues with fps at times, too. Seems like if you don't have something that's practically brand new, TF2 has a shit.

It's pretty ridiculous.

Thanks for posting the extra detail.

There's nothing relating to the game that would cause fps fluctuations on a day-night cycle. That is weird :)

The only possible (and even then it's a stretch) scenario where the daytime would have a negative affect upon your fps is if the ambient temperature is high enough (coupled with an internal cooling problem) to cause your CPU/GPU to overheat. Given that it's late autumn and cold, this seems highly unlikely - except for yuki and friends.

pharaoh posted some good general pointers. I disabled the Steam Community Overlay a long time ago because it's a bugged mess.

I don't think TF2 uses that much RAM* but it sure can spring a few holes. A leak could quickly eat up memory, but it doesn't sound like that's your problem - you'd be crashing a lot.

* One of the "problems" with the game is that, unlike Crysis (another late 2007 game), it wasn't designed with newer/future hardware or software in mind, so it can't take full use of it: Basic Multi-Core CPU support was patched in post-launch. It's a 32-bit application so it can't see your 8 gigs of RAM, let alone use it, and Valve's continued DX8.1 + DX9 support means any optimisations found in DX10 and DX11 can't be used either. Hence the diminishing returns as you upgrade your hardware.

That said, if you're running additional processes while playing, like streaming, then the resources left for the game become much smaller. A good memory overhead is important in this situation.

Another minor, but occasionally overlooked tip: Aero is a puzzling resource-hog. If you're using Vista or Windows 7 and have Aero enabled, set TF2 (can be applied to all games) to disable it on-launch: \steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\hl2.exe right-click\Properties\Compatibility\Check "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition\OK.

These CPU threading commands are stable for my i5:

cl_threaded_client_leaf_system "1"
mat_queue_mode "2"
r_queued_ropes "1"
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager "1"
r_threaded_particles "1"
r_threaded_renderables "1"

There are a couple more commands that relate to threading, but they're disabled by default, and enabling them caused some weird rendering glitches for no discernible fps gain.

If you encounter any issues using these, return to whatever you were using before. Or you can trial and error your way through each of them to see which one is causing the problem.

Im currently on a intel 3960x oc'd to 4.4ghz with low temps, 32gigs of ram, and a gtx 770 Overclocked slightly.

I set my fps_max to 241 and for the most part it stays at 240frames, however like everyone else is talking about occasionally it wants to stutter, and frames drop game feels like shit etc.

I found one thing for a no hats/unusual modification but it makes everyone bald, is there a better one out there that you all know of for getting rid of the unusual effects?????

mat_queue_mode 2
cl_threaded_bone_setup 0
cl_threaded_client_leaf_system 0
r_queued_decals 0
r_queued_ropes 1
r_queued_post_processing 0
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager 1
r_threaded_particles 1
r_threaded_renderables 1

Try this -dxlevel 91 in launch options + off bumpmap try it if u dont like its ok
and mat_specualar 0 if u also dont like just leave it

If this doesnt help ill research later
