(from the founder of oculus, Palmer Luckey)

We have not gotten into all the details yet, but a lot of the news is coming. The key points:
1) We can make custom hardware, not rely on the scraps of the mobile phone industry. That is insanely expensive, think hundreds of millions of dollars. More news soon.
2) We can afford to hire everyone we need, the best people that fit into our culture of excellence in all aspects.
3) We can make huge investments in content. More news soon.
We promise we won't change. If anything, our hardware and software will get even more open, and Facebook is onboard with that.

So it truly did come down to getting more money for development.

Great thread over on /r/truegaming regarding this.

I personally respect the optimism. I'm just really worried about what this means for the games. :\

nothing. literally all the oculus is is a monitor, nothing is stopping a game dev from rendering the game twice (once for each eye) and feeding it to the VR headset. you don't even need oculus libraries to do it, although they do make it convenient.

I feel like it's moreso a ploy on Zuckerberg's part to get people to hop more onto Facebook. Facebook depends on user count, and by making the headlines by buying out Occulus Rift, I guess Zuckerberg hopes to get people more invested and spend more time as a result on Facebook as people will somewhat associate VR/occulus rift with Facebook.

If you look at it in a more neutral position, I feel that the technology is still very much in its maturing stages and as others have stated, there is not enough cash flow to keep development going on. I listened to teksyndicate and Wendel brought up a good point where it seems that there is still a bridge gap in terms of development. In other words, it's a case of it being out too soon. Hopefully, Facebook actually makes use of this buyout. It makes sense as Carmack has showed great interest in Virtual Reality, hence one of the main reasons he left ID software in the first place to eventually take a position at Facebook.
