How much does it cost to host a LAN?

Our 170-man event is taking in around $3500 ($20 entry fee + additional income) for a 36 hour LAN. It's BYOC and we provide three meals on Saturday, and we're essentially breaking even (not going to go into the specifics of our budget, of course).
One advantage we have is that we're a campus organization, and so we're getting our resources at a nice discount since we're hosting in with CMU; we also have a lot of networking equipment available from friends, so basically our costs are reduced a lot. We spend about a third of our income on food though, so if you didn't offer meals but kept the same entrance fee, you're probably looking at a similar ballpark. In NYC it'll most likely be much more expensive than in Michigan, of course.

Your best bet would be to shop around different venues and see if you can get quotes without committing anything; everywhere will be different, but the biggest cost is typically renting space. Once you get a ballpark of how much money it'll take to rent the event venue, the internet connection (if it's not included), network and power equipment (including cables), and tables/chairs, you can just come up with a price for entry and go from there.

In theory I could try to get NYU to incorporate PC games as part of its tournament, but that sounds like a lot of effort on my part. I'm not sure how open it is to suggestions.
