ATH-M50s question

I'm already pretty set on getting a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50s, but I'm wondering what the different is between the coiled cable and straight cable. Couldn't find a thread on the cords specifically. My Sennheiser 202s finally died and I'm looking for something that will last a real long time.

If the coiled cable helps at all in the durability department, then I think I'd go for that but I'm just wondering from people with experience if it makes a difference and is worth the extra $20 on amazon. Also if anyone knows somewhere that has them cheaper than $140-$120, that'd be neat too.

I prefer coiled since it's usually shorter and easier if you're close to your source (ie computer or phone/ipod if mobile). Don't think it really matters much though, not like its gonna change the sound quality or anything. Haven't tried both the M50 variations myself, but there's tons of threads about it on the internet.

Also off topic, you might want to look at other headpohnes from the m50. They are really popular and not bad but for gaming there's really not much reason to go for them over open back phones (ad700, various sennheisers, etc). Might as well go for soundstage if you can.

they go on sale all the time heres a link for refurbed ones
coiled: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sdtid=6824810&sku=ATHM50RFB&ref=cj
straight: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sdtid=6824810&sku=ATHM50SRFB&ref=cj
tehres no difference between the two besides the cable

the straight cable is like 20 feet long but the coiled cable puts a bit of pressure on your head

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt-m6C5-T0M if you get the str8 cable

fyi monoprice sells a comprable headphone thats only 20 dollars

I have an ATH-M50S and I like it; I've had it for like half a year now with no cord problems. My only other experience with coiled cables with a cheaper version of it (M20 or M30 maybe?) and the coiled cable is annoying as fuck because it pulls the headphones if you stretch it too far; while you might have a similar cable length, the tension-free amount is much less. Maybe I'm just really sensitive to that issue though, just my 2 cents.

I use my m50s at LANS and AD300s at home. m50s isolate sound better but the AD300 sound better (to me at least) and yeah... coiling is only useful if you find straight gets tangled too much.

Hmm.. I don't think I contributed or helped in any way but I'm still pressing "Post Your Reply"

I'm not really doing any gaming lately, actually my biggest priorities right now are just durability, sound quality, comfort, and to a much more minor degree, portability.

I basically use mine for portable music. I use the coiled version. My only real complaint is that the cord doesn't disconnect. They aren't that great for gaming, unless you're somewhere loud.

I have them and I kind of regret buying them I use my IEMs a lot more than headphones, they can kind of clamp your head after extended use and I prefer an open headphone but if you can get them on sale they're definitely worth picking up and they'll be a big improvement over your HD202s as I went from sennheisers hd201s to the ath m50s.
