People like B4nny or other competitive/great players were.
My brother plays dota2, and 10hours in he was looking up how to get into comp and watching dendi, with 12,000 other people.

not saying star isnt good, but he's famous because he makes videos that are funny to some players.

I was just wondering what that would be like in our community.

e:

i like my downfrags (:^)) because i asked a question and asked for opinoins

To STARs credit he has uploaded some comp stuff, but not nearly enough. He gets views from mostly silly videos, but sprinkling some more comp stuff in would be nice.

tf2 has a much more casual scene and is much more casual than dota 2

a 7 year old idiot can play tf2 and not get flamed, with dota im not so sure. the mechanics of dota and it as a whole are also much less accessible

star, jerma, shibby etc. being popular is just the way tf2 is, since tf2 is very casual and competitive aspects of the game are not really visible in game or in a form a pub player can see

that was a bit of a rant
im just saying tf2 is casual/pub-oriented so entertainment is going to be popular, not high skilled content

you are getting downfragged because even with the tiniest inkling of understanding how comp tf2 worked you would know what you are asking isnt possible/plausible

when dendi is playing dota its the same game that everybody knows as dota
when banny is playing tf2 its very very removed from what 99% of the playerbase knows as tf2

past that youre just one of those assholes who goes "man what if so and so actually did so and so what a turn of events that would be"

you dont need to make a thread to theorycraft what would happen if banny was more popular, its really not that hard to figure it out

you may not be a dumb person but you are asking dumb questions

you might not like his fans, but you can't exactly fault him for that when it seems he makes a pretty damn good living pandering to them

he's not exactly indebted to the our community and any sort of competitive outreach he puts up on his youtube could just as easily be replaced with a run-of-the-mill pubbing video that'd net him far more money

a little ways back he even reached out to us to plan a competitive tournament with a very sizeable prize pot funded from his own pockets

You need to understand the difference between our game and other competitive games. Games like DOTA2 and CS:GO are BUILT to be competitive games, with a competitive focus. They are supported heavily by Valve, who have larger teams working on them constantly building features and competitive infrastructure into them. TF2 doesn't have this support. Whatever the reason is, TF2 seems to be meant as a "fun" game, or a public server casual game, or an accessible game, or the hats/trading game, whatever.

Our community is amazing - AMAZING. Like it's OUTSTANDING the kind of support we have with crowd funding events like Tip of the Hats or Insomnia LAN OURSELVES. It's mind boggling at times what great work people do with building plugins and addons and HUDs to advance the competitive scene. But Valve seems to be done putting this level of work into this game.

Events like i46/49/52 or the upcoming GXL are very big (for us) and do a lot for exposure. But you need to consider another thing, which is the small amount of international reach we have. Games like DOTA2 and CS:GO have very large reach outside of North America. DOTA especially has strong roots and history in Asia. We have a great Euro scene but the TF2 communities in areas such as Asia, Oceania, and South America are VERY VERY small compared to the massive swaths of people playing and following DOTA in these areas.

When TF2 packs a house, it's maybe a hundred people at a LAN event, plus people who are there for other games who may want to check it out. When DOTA2 packs a house, they pack the Staples Center.

I think it's fantastic that we have a few top streamers/YouTube people who bring hundreds of thousands of views to our game. But I think there are many obstacles preventing us from having lots of those, or bringing in the kind of numbers that players of these worldwide games do.

EDIT: People above make a great, much more concise point than me: TF2 lends itself to "Entertainment" videos, while DOTA2, for example, is more of a competitive game. I am wordy.

Where is the financial incentive if b4nny was getting paid as little as 100$ a video we would have
an overwhelming amount of videos. Making these videos is hard work and it has to appeal to the masses and since the tf2 Comp community is so small compared to the rest star knows what the everyday player wants. So why should he be targeting us if we area tiny fraction. my 2 cents

I just don't get the hate he gets, he makes fun, casual videos while getting more people interested in tf2, and who knows, some of those players will hear of competitive (and STAR has talked about this multiple times anyway) and progress into it themselves. That's not really a bad thing, is it? It's fine if you don't like his jokes but there's really no reason to hate the guy, at least to me.
