Hi just yesterday, I can't join a server (I instantly crash just before joining) when I have stuff in my custom folder. The only thing I changed was just opting in to the steam beta thing but I've reverted back to the standard version today and the problem still occurs.
I have a hitsound, hud, and prec in my custom folder.
EDIT: Just found out it happens with my cfg outside of my custom folder too. Deleting everything works perfectly fine.
Ok it's just my config that was in the custom folder and out of the custom folder that was causing issues.
I reinstalled steam and tf2 and all of the issues i had were fixed thank you comanglia.

do you have shadows on in your config? sorry if its irrelevant but shadows have been crashing me recently right before joining a server, out of no where.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that just a couple weeks ago, only my steam games take a bit longer to load and tf2 would just show up as a black screen when I start streaming which isn't a problem but it might have something to do with this.

EDIT: Just messed with shadows (turning them on and off, even disabling them from execing on launch) and still nothing

Ok I managed to remove bits from my cfg and found out that my gfx config was causing the crashes.

Bump would like to get these problems resolved (the autoexec crashing my game if I don't join a surf or mge server first, taking forever to load steam games, and being unable to stream tf2 using obs' game capture)
