Sometimes I'll crash as soon as I join a server and get to the motd screen or as soon as I choose a class. The exact same thing will happen multiple times in a row and then TF2 will start working normally again for a couple minutes until I crash and the same issue happens. Pretty much every crash is followed by the "hl2.exe has stopped working" popup.
Another weird thing I've noticed is that every time I join a server I'll get a "connecting to server" screen that I've never had before.

After this screen shows for like 10 seconds, the screen will return back to the normal server connection screen and I'll join the server fine. Also, sometimes when I try to join a server it will show the weird connecting to server screen and then I'll either get a Steam authentication error or a connection failed after 4 retries error.
I've tried reinstalling TF2.
Anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot these problems? Thanks

Are you using a wifi connection? I used to get that connection timeout thing all the time until I changed to wired.
Also do you run a lot of vpks or anything like that? I used to run CleanTF2 which caused me to crash quite often until I got rid of it.

I'm on a wired connection and not using any vpks. I think the problem was that I was running TF2 in 1600x900 full screen and not my native 1920x1080. Haven't crashed so far on 1080.

I got similar problems when I tried to play on 4:3 stretched, would make sense if there was some problem with different resolutions

check your multithreading commands because those can sometimes cause crashes due to instability
