How to use custom resolution?

I've been playing on 800 x 600 for a while, and my game feels a lot smoother on it. I want to be able to keep a low resolution with 16:9, but it's not happening. When I do -w 896 -h 504 (https://pacoup.com/2011/06/12/list-of-true-169-resolutions/), it just defaults it to 640 x 480. Help?

if u have an nvidia card, you can create custom resolutions by doing this

nvidia control panel -> change resolution -> customize -> create custom resolution -> horizontal pixels 896 vertical lines 504

but dont get mad at me if it doesnt work, i use this for csgo, havent tried in tf2

Powerstrip, ive used this shit to get myself 900x600 in tf2 fullscreen, just dont go with height lower than 480, JUST DONT

edit: proof of concept: 960x600, it was actually 960 and not 900, oh well, still gave me the 16:10 fov, when compared to 4:3 800x600

I was looking into this same exact thing with 640x360, 960x540, and 1024x576 a few days ago. I'm running Intel integrated graphics, so custom res' will probably be more flexible for you.

Basically, you'll only be able to run fullscreen resolutions that your monitor recognizes, but even then there's no guarantee that it'll display correctly. Look into your monitor's 'available modes', and you'll have to either work with whatever's in there or add your res to it & restart your pc.

Edit: can confirm 896 x 504 works in tf2 http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198027288558/screenshot/645503094103886503 just gotta add that res to your monitor's list of modes to run in, or else the game won't recognize it. Also make sure you're playing on a 16:9 monitor, playing on a 4:3 monitor and wanting black bars won't work.

you see man, ive been trying to get my res @ 720x450, because thats 1/2 of my native res: 1440x900, but the 640 for width and 480 for height seems to be the minimal values for any monitor(unless the 90's CRT capable of running 320x200 lying in ones basement, collecting dust), it just wont recognize the resolution and either go dark and return to previous(what happened to me) or simply deny it from changing/break the monitor

640x480 is the minimum resolution source supports, because VGUI only supports scaling up and not down (all coordinates for vgui are based off of 640x480)
