You get ~800 fps just on the menu? God damn, what are your specs?

If you are in game and you open the menu the game is still rendering the same shit.
Dan_removing the refresh rate lock might work
I don't use vsync so that is irrelevant.
My FPS goes back to normal without a gfx config but i hate the way the game looks without one.

Save the custom files you want and use this method:

It works the same way for tf2. After you do this I would personally suggest to use the default features the game gives you but customize only the things you find the most important like if you think ragdolls/gibs are distracting or whatever. The game is infinitely more smooth and enjoyable this way. Seriously this is coming from someone with years of disappointment with trying to find the right settings and realizing the best settings are the ones tf2 originally gives you. My skill/performance improved tenfold.

Turning on AA and AF fixed it. Apparently TF2 wasn't stressing the GPU enough and it was going to 2d clocks.

I can't help but notice you have a pending item notification (that stupid exclamation mark), I've noticed quite a few times in mge my frames drop down to below 60 from 300+ when I have a pending item that I need to accept. Next time you get this error trying clearing that and seeing if it helps
