Hey guys, do you have any idea on how to convert a .jpg image to a .vtf to use for a hud background on mac? I don't have access to a windows computer and have tried using wine and winebottler to use VFTEdit but it comes up with a fatal error when I import my image and I could not get the photoshop extension working. Do you guys know any other programs I can use or should I just create a virtualbox and do it that way? I have a copy of windows on my computer from the windows insider program and I know how to set up the virtualbox but I would prefer if I don't have to edit my files in a virtualbox all the time.

If you have a Photoshop, you can use this plug-in: http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=154

The photoshop plugin doesn't work for you because it uses native code compiled for Windows. Unfortunately, vtflib is pretty entangled in the Windows API, so it's not trivial to port to OS X. Someone has ported it to linux, so I'll attempt to throw a web converter together over the next few days. If I get it done in a reasonable amount of time I'll post it here. For the moment, though, it appears that you are stuck with virtualbox, or you could try getting the command line version working under wine.

If I recall correctly the VTF plugin for Photoshop doesn't even work in 64bit Photoshop, which means even disregarding vtflib relying on Windows, you're SOL because OS X hasn't been 32bit in almost a decade.
