I recently purchased this ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007NJ0S1W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) dvi-d cable so I can run 144hz @ 1080p instead of 120hz @ 800x600. However, the cable doesn't really fit into my xl2411 benq. I was able to get a clear image on the screen after a minutes of finagling, but the cable moved out of the position pretty quickly and went back to 'no signal'. Where cable can I buy that will actually fit my monitor? Should I get a display port cable or a hdmi 1.3 cable instead of dvi-d?
Specs say it should have a DL--Dvi connector. Maybe your cable has broken pins?
maybe your monitor needs dvi-i

The port on my monitor is the dvi-d dual link cable, which is the cable that I ordered.

I'm not sure what dl-dvi is, but I was able to get a clear image at one point with the cable plugged in, so I assume it's not a problem with the pins.

update: I removed the metal shit protecting it and it still doesn't work, so I guess it's either a problem with the pins or the port. I guess I should just go with display port or hdmi 1.3?

What the fuck are you doing oh my god are you even using the screws on the cable to hold it in place like how are you fucking this up I don't understand.
pls post pictures of the monitor outlet you are brutally trying to force the cable into

You have successfully destroyed that cable.
There is no Display Port on that monitor.
If it's the XL2411T then there's no HDMI 1.3 either.
Buy the same cable again, plug it in but this time tighten the screws a bit so it doesn't fall out. Problem solved.
EDIT: Also that monitor should've come with a DVI cable in the box.

It was incredibly difficult to plug it in so that I could get a signal the first time (and impossible for me to replicate it). I really think the port is just fucked. Also, the cable wouldn't plug in far enough for the screws to reach the sockets. I have a z model, so I'm probably just gonna get an hdmi 1.3.

You probably just didn't hold the plug straight or fucked up the pins too much on the previous tries.
Wouldn't be surprised if you kill the HDMI cable too.

Definitely possible

Probably did, but I think I'd just rather buy a different type of cable and not have to deal with a potentially faulty cable/cord

Your HDMI 1.3 most likely won't support 144hz 1080p.

Should I go hdmi 1.4 then? Would that be compatible with the xl2411z?

Only HDMI 2 officially supports 144hz at 1080p. 1.4b officially supports 120@1080, but only for what they call "3D processing", which I'm not sure what they even mean by, maybe Setsul can explain (I think it means it just copypastes the same 60hz signal to output it twice for 3D viewing), but it's not 2D viewing aka what you want.
Anecdotal evidences exist of people hacking and OCing their way to 120hz over HDMI 1.4 but basically, it's not supported.
You should get a new DL-DVI cable and hope for the best and get your monitor fixed if the input is really fucked.

How do I find out if my hdmi port is hdmi 2.0 compatible (couldn't really find anything from googling)? Could I run 144hz at a lower res on a lower hdmi version? My dvi to hdmi allows me to run 120hz on 600x800.

can afford 144hz monitor but not a mic:(

The XL2411Z doesn't support HDMI 1.4 iirc.
#13
1.4 supports both 3D and 1080p 120Hz, 1.3 supports neither even though it got the same bandwidth.
Also if it were the same picture twice it wouldn't be 3D.
#14
It's not. Just get a new DVI cable and don't fuck it up this time.
DVI is the only way to get 144Hz on the BenQ XL2411Z/T just like on most 1920x1080 144 Hz monitors.

This is what has been confusing me too. Are you sure about
1.4 supports both 3D and 1080p 120Hz, 1.3 supports neither even though it got the same bandwidth.
though? Because in all sources I could find it said that while 1.4 has the bandwith, it only supports 120hz in terms of 3D, but not actual 120hz 2D refresh rate.

ok it turns out I somehow actually wasn't plugging it in straight, I guess I'm a massive idiot, it all works now tho.
thanks for the help dudes

1.4b supports 1080p 60Hz 3D so via custom resolutions it's definitely possible. Not sure if it's officially supported.
Doesn't really matter though.

I know it's temping to hold the plug with your fingers on the wider sides but then you can't get it straight. You have to hold it at the small sides or the cable itself which is a bit awkward.

Do most not support DP? Huh.
Do most not support DP? Huh.
Considering DP 1.2 (1080p 144 Hz, though even 1.0 could do 120 Hz) and HDMI 1.4 are about the same age (2008/2009) and it took them ages to get that integrated I'm not exactly surprised.
DVI-D Dual Link is by far the most widespread and oldest connection that allows 1080p 144Hz so everyone went with that. HDMI and VGA are just for specs/compatibility.

Thank you for contacting BenQ.
The monitors of the XL series can provide 120 or 144Hz exclusively through a DVI dual link cable (which is provided with the monitor). No 120Hz image can be displayed through HDMI cable at any resolution.

That's an interesting quote because they broadly state "the XL series" even though my XL2420Z has a DP 1.2 and definitely can do 144 with it. Hell, the only two monitors in the 9-monitor XL lineup that don't have DP1.2 are the 2411T and 2411Z.
Interestingly, the XL2420T does list that the HDMI/VGA ports can provide a range from 24-120Hz vert frequency: link
So maybe some displays do support it, at certain resolutions. Who knows though.

It's a bit older but it's still a lie anyway because HDMI 120Hz works on 720p even with the XL2411T iirc.
The point is they expect and want you to use DVI, that's why they give you a DVI cable.
