It's been more than a year since this topic has been discussed but I want to discuss it again, because it's been so long and a lot has changed.

I did not make the video, it was made by Waltzer.

scrimshawmelee is fun to watch and tf2 isnt

Its more that it isn't fun to watch a 5-0 Froyo or Se7en roll compared to two really good melee players

The problem with this is that mm didn't change much at all from the beta. Even in the beta custom graphics configs could be used. You cannot:

  • turn off viewmodels (thank goodness we got min viewmodels though)
  • change your viewmodel fov
  • turn down graphics settings if you have a system that can't run tf2 that good
  • play with certain class limits and weapons that are blatantly unbalanced

It's even been acknowledged that comp mm came out long before it should have. If improvements were actively being made on rebalancing weapons, there'd be a lot better perception of comp mm but it's been far too long since an update that changed weapon stats. Only bugs more or less. What's even a bit more upsetting is the fact that there have been so many good suggestions about what could be done to balance certain weapons.

There's no doubt that a balanced game is a fun game, as the video mentioned about sm4sh, but there's only so much that we as the comp community can do before we have to rely on developer backing. Melee obviously hasn't gotten that but the only way that melee could become a balanced game would be to release a whole new game, since it was released in an era that didn't have bugs that could be patched out through online updates.
