Firenot sure what you mean, directx 8?
i'm using directx 8 but mine is not gray, i dont know why

Comanglia's configmat_monitorgamma 2 // Controls brightness, try 1.8 to make it brighter or 2.2 to get it darker. Only works in fullscreen.
2 is the default value, the lower the more pale/gray (sdb used 1.6 for instance), and the higher the darker

So some great way to get things things to be grayish in tf2.
1. Goto your monitor OSD menu and set blue, red, and green to 0.
2. Nvidia set "Digital Vibrance" to 0% for AMD set Saturation to 0.
3. Get some Graybanns on the Steam Market and wear them in game.
