New monitor trying to get 144hz

So I recently bought an Asus vg248qe led monitor advertized as 144hz. After plugging it in and hooking it up to the computer I opened up my nvidia control panel to change the refresh rate on it to 144hz, however the only options showing are 60hz, 59hz, and 50hz. I don't really know what is wrong or what I need to do to get it to 144hz. Is there any way to fix this problem or a driver i'm missing. Thanks in advance.

If you're on Windows 10 just do this:

Right click desktop

Display settings

Advanced display settings

Display adapter properties

Monitor tab

Change refresh rate there.

If it doesn't show up you need to use another cable connection.

yeah i think you need a displayport or dvi thingy instead of hdmi

Cerdur is correct hdmi(at least all the most common versions) does not support 120+. You will need to use either dual link dvi or display port.

did your monitor not come with a dvi or displayport cable? most 144hz monitors should
